  2. The Components of a Percent Problem • 1. BASE: the whole or total, starting point, or that to which something is compared • 2. RATE: the percent (%) • 3. PART: The result of multiplying the base and rate. PART of the whole.

  3. The Percent Formula • P = B x R • Part = Base x Rate • Ex: find the part • 1) 25% of 72 2) 130% of 210 • 3) ½ % of 900

  4. Calculating Sales Tax • P = B x R • Sales tax = Sales x Sales Tax Rate EX: Your dinner bill (not including the 7.5% sales tax) was $9.25. Determine the amount of sales tax and the total cost before tip. Round to the nearest penny.

  5. Helpful hints… • 1. The base is usually preceded by words like OF or ON. It represents the whole. • 2. The rate is followed by the word percent or %. • 3. The part is in the same units as the base and is usually a portion of the base.

  6. EX (from p 101-103) • 18. In a poll of 1582 people, 4.5% said that they prefer to purchase Ben and Jerry’s brand ice cream. Find the number of people who said they prefer Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, rounded to the nearest whole number.

  7. 24. According to Hormel Foods Corporation, Spam @ and Spam Lite together help 62.2% of the $148 million canned lunchmeat category over a 52 week period. Find the total annual sales of these Hormel products. Round the nearest hundredth of a million. • 32. A family of four with a monthly income of $5150 spends 90% of its earnings and saves the balance for a down payment of a house. Find (a) the monthly savings and (b) the annual savings of the family.
