AC Repair – How to Proceed When Your

AC Refused to Work

Most people take their air conditioning system for granted and do not pay much attention to

proper maintenance. You have to understand that not maintaining your AC unit properly would

lead to serious issues that require expensive AC repair. However, it is also a fact that no matter

how hard you try, there may be minor issues affecting the performance of your air conditioning

system. One of the most common issues is that the AC system does not turn on.

While it is better to let a professional check it for you, it is possible to resolve the issue by

identifying the underlying cause of the trouble. You should certainly try to fix it yourself, but be

sure to keep in mind that any problem with the circuit breaker, thermostat, or internal switch

could be the reason why the AC unit is not turning on. You have to check everything to identify

the problem and then fix it to get your AC to work again. Here is how to proceed:

Before going any further, be sure to check that the thermostat is set to the "Cool"

position. You may have problems if your thermostat is set to "Heat" or "Off". You should

also ensure that the thermostat is not set above the room temperature.

Now, check the circuit breaker and ensure that it is functioning properly. Any problem

with the circuit breaker would keep your AC from turning on because it controls the

condensing unit or compression. You should first check the 240-volt circuit breaker and

then check the 120-volt circuit breaker that usually controls the furnace blower. They

should function properly when in the "ON" position.

If you notice that the circuit breaker is tripped, you may have to reset it or even have to

replace the fuse. A very important thing to bear in mind is that sometimes the fuse will

blow again when you replace it and try to turn your air conditioning system on. If that is

the case, do not try anything different and call a technical for AC repair. A fuse that

blows again usually indicates a more serious electrical problem and you should let an

expert take care of it.

Be sure to check all the switches around your air conditioner. Ensure that those switches

are turned on – this also applies to the external safety switch, which you may find next to

the condensing unit.

Have a look at the condensate tray because it sometimes comes with a sensor switch that

can turn the AC off when there is water on the tray. Remove the water and turn that

switch on again.

The bottom line is that you can handle an AC repair task on your own if you know the root cause

of the trouble. When your air conditioning system refuses to work, you will have to check for a

number of things. If you cannot do it yourself or you are not sure about how to proceed, you will

be much better off hiring an AC technician to handle everything in a safe and efficient way.
