  1. KITCHEN CABINET REFACING: WHAT SHOULD YOU EXPECT AND WHEN TO OPT FOR IT? A change in the look of your kitchen can uplift the overall look and feel of your home. Fortunately, you do not have to change everything in your kitchen to achieve that new look – you can have it done by simple cabinet refacing. The process involves covering the exposed frames using a thin veneer of plastic laminate or real wood. It is also important to replace doors and drawer fronts to complement or match the new veneer. Finally, knobs, hinges, molding, and pull are changed to complete the transformation. Many people think refacing is a superficial way to treat your kitchen, but even if it is, the results are still quite impressive. Should You be Going for Cabinet Refacing? It is never easy to decide if you refacing is a better option or you should opt for refacing. Refacing is usually a good idea if you know that your cabinet boxes are structurally in good condition. It means that you may not benefit from refacing if you have cabinets with warping, water damage, and broken frames. You will be using the veneer, so it is sometimes also important to use fasteners along with adhesives when dealing with particleboard cabinetry. You may want to consider refacing if you do not want any component of your existing cabinetry changed but want to change the finish or color. A professional can achieve it through sanding or chemically stripping finish from the wood. They will finish by applying a new stain or paint. The problem is that refacing is never a good idea when you do not have wood cabinets. Refacing can still be an option here. It is important to point out that some homeowners opt for another option, which is wood restoration. It is usually a better option when dealing with stained wood cabinets. However, that can be very expensive and take a lot of time as well. This leaves you with refacing and refacing. To make a decision, you should consider your kitchen layout, door style, and budget. There is no point in refacing doors if you have your door style. Similarly, it is never a good idea to refinish if your kitchen’s configuration is not good enough or you want to add other cabinetry.

  2. What to Expect from Cabinet Refacing? For a quick change in look, you will be better off opting for kitchen cabinet refacing. You will have to hire a professional installer to take care of all this. Be sure to spend some time online and conduct some research to shortlist a few installer. The best ones will have good reviews and good experience. A professional installer will first measure your cabinets to determine the amount of veneer needed, how much hardware is required, and the correct quantities and sizes of door and drawer fronts. Once your installer has all the materials, they will remove old drawer fronts and cabinet doors and prepare the surface by washing the exteriors using a degreaser. They will also sand the finish here. They may also repair any significant flaw in the surface and secure it for the new veneer. Once fixed, they will complete the process by applying veneer to the cabinet faces and mounting the new doors and hardware. The whole process may take 2-4 days. Just work with a professional cabinet refacing installer to have everything finished properly.
