Data used to determine eligibility, to build clear picture of who the student is, and to determine best fit

  26. Private or Independent Colleges • Many private, independent, or out-of-state colleges are available on Common App • If not a Common App school, check their website since they may have their own application • Deadlines and fees vary • Letters of recommendation are often required so make sure your Brag Sheet and Resume are up-to-date in Naviance • SAT or ACT scores are often required

  27. Common App & Naviance • Create your Common App account at: https://apply.commonapp.org/createaccount • Once your account is created, you will need to match your Common App account with your Naviance account • Make sure to indicate when you are applying (e.g. Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision, etc.) • This allows PHS staff members (e.g. teachers and your Guidance Counselor) to submit the application materials on your behalf • Before you can match your accounts, you will need to add your high school of attendance and enter at least one college. You can now search for your high school by name, CEEB code (053344), city, and country.

  28. Matching Common App & Naviance • Click on "My Colleges" and select "Recommenders and FERPA" • Select "Complete Release Authorization" • Read through their explanation of FERPA and check off the box at the bottom • Please select "I waive my right to review all recommendations and supporting documents." • Once you submit your FERPA, it will apply to all college apps you submit through Common App, so make sure you select the correct box

  29. Matching Common App & Naviance • In the "Colleges I'm Applying to" tab, select "Match Accounts" • Enter the exact email address that was used to create Common App account and your date of birth

  30. Requesting Letters of Recommendation in Naviance • Students must request Prospect teachers through Naviance. If you have "Other Recommenders" such as outside coaches, etc, you will add those via the Common App • Click "Letters of Recommendation" • Click "Add Request"

  32. Early Action and Early Decision • Make sure you indicate Early Action or Early Decision in your "Colleges I'm Applying to" list • You may also need to select how you'll submit your application (e.g. via Common App or directly to the institution) • This is how we know what your admission deadline is so we can submit your documents on time.

  33. Things to Consider • A list of no more than 10 colleges is recommended overall. Include a mixture of safety, target, and dream/reach schools • Talk with your parents about how you will finance college (grants, loans, etc.) • Don't rule out private colleges. Many offer good financial aid packages based on need and/or merit • Fill out the FAFSA/Dream Act even if you think you might not qualify for financial aid
