  2. About ExtraCare The ExtraCare Charitable Trust supports around 4,500 residents across 14 retirement villages and 17 housing schemes. A domiciliary care service is offered in each location by ExtraCare, residents are also able to use external providers. We know that at least 24% of our residents are living with dementia and other common mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, additionally we support residents who are at risk of becoming isolated within the scheme or village community. Research which launched our Enriched Opportunities Programme stated that around 30% of our residents are likely to experience these issues. That programme also launched our Locksmith role, a specially trained member of staff who can support residents with living with dementia and wellbeing.

  3. What the environment can do… • Café / Restaurant • Games room • Village Hall • Gym • Greenhouse • EOP Suite • Library / IT Suite • BUT • most importantly spaces where people can be people!

  4. Changing spaces Broadway Gardens – 1995 (56 apartments) Bournville Gardens – 2015 (212 apartments) Each is unique, in a unique area and equally valuable as a community resource

  5. Quick story Housing café/bar BUT… Risk of moving older people out of sight? Location of the housing is important consider High-street coffee shop Staff more empathic? Aware of older peoples needs? environment (still work to be done), surrounded by people that are relatable… Style of service, terminology (small/large), environment (furniture). But LOVELY TEAS! • location of housing, so it can be a hub • Highlights staff training, and dementia friendly communities or ‘older people friendly’ • A Village hub is great… but at the same time risk removing older people from the wider community

  6. Community projects and involvement • Broadway Gardens (Wolverhampton) Community Library • Lark Hill Village (Nottingham) Alzheimer’s Society Peer Support Groups / Singing for the Brain • Pannel Croft Village (Birmingham) Memory Clinic

Community projects and involvement Community Based ‘Locksmith’ service Pilot year between Oct 2014 to Oct 2015 – supported around 60 individuals and their families in Coventry 69% of people remained living at home and avoided moves to care settings. • Integrated Neighbourhood Team: • Social workers, CPN, OT, Physiotherapist, community matron, and Locksmith • Vulnerable individuals are identified by GPs across three neighbourhoods and provided extra support to avoid crisis, hospital admission, or relocation. • Team supports the person for around 6 weeks. • Discharge to Assess service: • Care team • Occupational Therapist • Locksmith • Individuals are identified in hospital of needing extra support when returning home. • Team supports the person for around 6 weeks.
