Objectives of the Day Objectives • Students will be able to list the axis on which a plane can turn • Students will be able to describe how Bernoulli's principle works • Students will be able to list and explain controlling parts of an Airplane. • Students will complete Paper Planes Construction, Begin Design Process for Wooden Planes.

  3. The Axes of Air There are 3 main Rotations of a Plane PITCH - ROLL - YAW

  4. The Axes of Air There are 3 main Rotations of a Plane PITCH ; The Aircraft PITCHES around the Lateral or WING Axis. (i.e. The Plane Flips Forwards or Backwards)

  5. The Axes of Air There are 3 main Rotations of a Plane ROLL ; The Aircraft ROLLS around the Longitude or Fuselage Axis. (i.e. The Plane does a “Barrel Roll”)

  6. The Axes of Air There are 3 main Rotations of a Plane YAW ; The Aircraft YAWS around the Vertical Axis. (i.e. The Plane revolves around in a 360°Fashion)

  7. Airfoils and Air Pressure Air Pressures around an Air Foil Low Air Pressure on top of the airfoil, High Air Pressure on the bottom of the airfoil. What does this cause to happen? Low High

  8. Bernoulli’s Principle The Basics of Bernoulli’s Principle As the velocity of the air moves increases, the pressure of the air decreases. Low High

  10. Controlling Parts HORIZONTAL STABILIZER Part of the Airplanes Tail that Helps keep the airplane stable on the PITCH Axis during Flight.

  11. Controlling Parts VERTICAL STABILIZER Part of the Airplanes Tail that Helps keep the airplane stable on the YAW Axis during Flight.

  12. Controlling Parts AILERONS Parts that move in opposite direction of each other and cause the plane to roll to whichever side the aileron is up. ELEVATORS Parts that move up or down that cause the plane to Pitch in the opposite direction. If the Elevator is up, the nose of the plane will pitch down, and vice-versa.

  13. Controlling Parts FLAPS Flaps that move up and down together to increase or decrease DRAG on the plane. RUDDER The Rudder moves Left and Right and causes the plane to YAW left or right. It is the sole part that controls the YAW axis.

  14. DESIGN CHALLENGE You are to design a wooden plane that can maintain air flight for at least 10 seconds or more when flown outside. You may use the design style given to you, or be innovative and come up with your own style.

  15. DESIGN CHALLENGE You must use and show the 12 steps of the design process in your design. You must complete the research directed questions and evaluation worksheet on your design.

  16. Review Questions What are the three axes of flight? What controlling part causes the plane to increase or decrease drag? What does the Elevator on a plane do? What part moves the plane on the YAW Axis?
