  1. HARDWARE SEQUENCERS • A Hardware sequencer is a machine designed to create and manage electronic music. The first music sequencers were made in 1977 by Roland. This 1986 model is a perfect example of an early hardware sequencer

  2. Changing technology • More modern hardware sequencers use digital hardware and replaced the analogue equipment in the 1990s. This is a modern day Yamaha QY700 music sequencer. The Korg SQD1 sequencer seen below is now a discontinued model.

  3. Conclusion • In my conclusion, hardware sequencers are becoming more advanced and computer based. As time passes, we are relying more on the digital side of recording as opposed to the analogue side of recording.

  4. Software Sequencers A brief description & history

  5. What is a software sequencer? • Identical to a hardware sequencer in function • All processes happen inside software on a pc • Potentially more flexible than hardware

  6. History • Midi standard • Atari ST • PC & Mac • Combined software

  7. Hardware + Software Sequencers • Many urban producers swear by this range of machines. They have used the MPC's since the start of this line of products and the MPC 60 has become a classic among sequencers. • However, the MPC's are more than just samplers as many in the Hip-Hop fraternity will use nothing but MPC's for their sequencing needs.

  8. SOFTWARE SEQUENCERS • You are most likely to use a software sequencer in a modern studio environment. • There are many of these for PC • Pro Tools and Ableton Live are the industry standards

  9. The Modern Recording Studio • In a modern studio environment you should be greeted by software, sequencing and hardware for editing the binary data. • Today's audio systems are all about controlling your sound and firms have found this out which is very good because the modern music technician needs not only extensive control but cost-effectiveness which has been provided by modern technology and Chinese manufacturing!

  10. Conclusion • In order to progress, we as modern music technologists must advance and embrace new ideas and interfacing between hardware and software. It is, in my opinion the way forward. And just as midi revolutionised music production so will the hybrid methods of today shape the future. • Many manufacturers are now producing in my view very accessible technologies for the manipulation of audio, such as M-Audio who are producing a wide range of cost effective hardware and are now shipping Pro Tools with their range of computer hardware.
