  8. William Turner • ° London 1775 • † London 1851 • Nationality: British • Romantic landscape painter • He was very much inspired by shipwrecks, fires, natural catastrophes and natural phenomena (such as sunlight, storm, rain and fog).

  9. Salvador Dali • ° Figueres 1904 • † Figueres 1989 • Nationality: Spanish • Surrealistic painter • Dali was a very eccentric figure • He had a remarkable moustache

There + to be • There + to be = an equivalent of the Dutch ‘erzijn’e.g. There are two boats on this painting. • ‘Zichbevinden’ can be expresses by ‘there + to be’ • e.g. There are curtains at the window. (NOT: There hang…) Erhangengordijnenvoor de ramen. • e.g. There are towels in the cupboard. (NOT: There lie…) Er liggen handdoeken in de kast. • e.g. There are mice in the attic. (NOT: Theresit…) Er zitten muizen op zolder.

Group work • Work in groups of 4 • Describe the 2 paintings (use ‘there + to be’) • Compare the 2 paintings • Give your personal opinion • +/- 15 minutes • Speak English • Don’t shout and make sure that everybody can give their opinion • Present it to the class • Everybody has to say something! • +/- 2 minutes
