Why study Classics? • Modern Western society has its roots in Classical world. • Modern film, theatre, architecture, art, sculpture, political thought, democracy, engineering, military tactics, and modern philosophy among others. • Classical Studies offers a broad education drawing on elements of History, Art, Philosophy, Theatre and Literature.   3. What will I study? 4 Topics • Alexander the Great • Greek Tragedy (Drama) • Socrates and Plato (Philosophy) • Roman Art and Architecture.

  4. The Exam? • The Leaving Cert exam is essay based. • You are required to answer 6 essay style questions in 3 hours. • A good level of English is required. • Essay should be logical, well-structured and include well developed points. • An interest in the Ancient World. • An interest in exploring literature, art, history, philosophy.

  5. Greek or Latin? • Do I need to have studied Greek or Latin at Junior Cert? • No, definitely not. • Little or no language is required for the Classical Studies course. • We use English translations of all texts.

  6. Italy Trip • Students who study Classical Studies in 5th year get first preference for laces on the Poetry Classical Italian trip. • Usually around Easter time. • Visit Rome, Pompeii, Mt. Vesuvius.
