  2. Introduction The Iditarod is a sled dog race in Alaska. If you do it you will have a hard time because you have to run up the hills next to the dogs to get less weight on the sleds so the dogs can make it up faster. The wind blows hard in your face so hard that you can barely see it is really hard and it would take years and years of practice.

  3. Mushers • Sonny Lindner is a 64 year old musher in the Iditarod. • He was born on Christmas Eve. • He came to Alaska in 1970. • His bib number is 70 • He began mushing in the early 70’s. • He was interested in the Iditarod race in 1976. He loves training and racing sled dogs.

  4. Dogs Dogs have to pull sleds and when they do they have to wear booties so they don’t hurt their paws. If one or more dogs get hurt or sick, another set of dogs can come in.

  5. Awards • The Red Lantern Awards is a red colored lantern that glows while the Iditarod racers race. It does not stop until the last racer crosses the finish line. • The PenAir Spirit award is given to the first musher to reach McGrath this years winner was Sonny Lindner.

  6. Route & Checkpoints • The race runs from Anchorage, Alaska to Nome. Some routes are the southern and the Northern routes. They are about 1050 miles long. Some checkpoints on the Northern route are in Anchorage and Nome.
