Unitary • Central government holds nearly all power • Local governments (states, counties) are under the control of the central gov’t • Central gov’t can change the way local gov’ts operate or eliminate them completely • Officials make and enforce laws w/o regard for local gov’ts • Monarchies are an example of a unitary gov’t • Saudi Arabia is a monarchy with a unitary gov’t

  4. Confederation • Local gov’ts hold all of the power • Central gov’t depends on the local gov’t for its existence • Central gov’t only has power the local gov’t gives it (weakness) • Some organizations are run like a confederation • League of Arab States • OPEC

  5. Federal • Power is shared among different levels of gov’t such as central and local • Power is divided into national gov’ts and state gov’ts • Israel is a federal gov’t
