  • Every town/city is divided into voting areas called "wards" (e.g. GGMSS is in Ward 1) Mississauga Wards
  • People who live in the ward elect 1 councillor to sit on City Council
  • People also vote for a mayor

  • Each province is divided into voting areas called "ridings"

(e.g. GGMSS is in the riding of Mississauga

South) GTA Ridings

  • In each riding, a number of candidates will run in the election
  • Most of these candidates belong to a political party (e.g. the Liberals, NDP, etc.)
  • People who live in the riding get to vote for ONE candidate only

The candidate who gets the most votes wins the election in that riding
  • S/he gets a "seat" in Parliament and is the MP or MPP for that riding

Who becomes Prime Minister or Premier?
  • At the end of the election, they count how many candidates from each party won a seat
  • The party with the most seats wins the election and becomes the ruling government
  • That party's leader becomes the Prime Minister or the Premier

REMEMBER!!!
  • We do not vote for our Prime Minister or Premier (like they do in the USA) but we do vote for our Mayor
  • The leader of the winning party gets to be PM or Premier
  • The leader of the political party that comes in second place becomes the Leader of the Opposition
