Many colleges will require foreign language in college. Some colleges may use all or some of your high school credit to fulfill the college graduation requirement.

Please review the math sequence in your course planning guide on page 16. Selecting your Math ClassThe class listed first represents the class your student is currently enrolled in. The classes in bold represents your choice(s) for freshman math.

Selecting yourScience Class • Earth Science - Select 30111 and 30112 • Biology - Select 30211 and 30212 • Quality Core Biology - Select 30121 and 30122 (formerly Honors Biology) • Special Education Science • Science I (select 39111 & 39112) • Practical Science (select 39211 and 39212) offered in 2010-11 • Life Skills Science (select 39311 and 39312) All placements will be based on the recommendation of the MS Science department. Select the course of your choice. Further review of EXPLORE scores will determine final placement. Please review the four- year science sequence on page 18 of the CPG.

  14. Selecting PE and Health • If your date of birth is on or before January 14, 1995, select 1st quarter PE (50101), 2nd quarter PE (50102) and 2nd semester Health (50110) unless you plan to be in marching band, in which case select first semester Health (50110) and third quarter PE (50103) and 4th quarter PE (50104). • If your date of birth is on or after January 15, 1995 or you plan to be in Marching Band, select first semester Health (50110) and 3rd quarter PE (50103) and 4th quarter PE (50104). • If you are placed in special education health*, select 59111 and 59112 plus 1st quarter PE (50101) and 2nd quarter PE (50102) OR 3rd quarter PE (50103) and 4th quarter PE (50104). *placement will be made by your MS PI.

Selecting Electives • Classes which end in “0” meet either semester • Classes which end in “1” meet first semester • Classes which end in “2” meet second semester • Class with a second digit of “9” are special education courses. • Make sure you select both semesters of a year long course. Year long courses are indicated in bold on page 2 of the Course Planning Guide. (i.e. TV 160, foreign language, band, choir, Family and Consumer Science, Intro to Ag, Intro to Art).

Social Studies Electives • World History to 1350(first semester class/select 40111) • World History since 1350(second semester class/select 40112) • World History Honors *(select 40121 and 40122) *placement based on the recommendation of MS Social Studies Department. World History is not a graduation requirement - it is only a freshman elective which can be used to complete the semester of social studies for graduation and is one or two additional credits for college entrance (see slide #4 & #5). Special Ed Placement in Social Studies (Life Skills Social Studies/select 49001 and 49002)

  23. Study Hall • You may take one or two semesters of study hall. • First semester study hall (90121). Special Education Homework Assistance (90011). • Second semester study hall (90122). Special Education Homework Assistance (90012).

  24. Meetings at theMiddle School • Middle School Counselors will meet with the entire 8th grade class February 3rd and 4th to distribute registration packets. • Students and Parents can begin to enter course requests February 3rd in their Skyward Account. • Counselors will check the computer entries and collect the pink sheet and a computer printout of course requests February 11th.

  25. Recommendation Letters • A mailing will be sent from the Middle School with recommendations for each student in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies February 2nd. • Students who are recommended for honors classes and choose to opt out, should choose the regular course level equivalent. • Parents who have questions regarding their child's recommended placement should contact the Middle School Counselors for further assistance.

  26. Directions for Completing Registration • Students will be requesting freshman courses on-line using their Skyward access account beginning February 3rd. • Make sure you select at least 12 credits entered under “courses requested”. If you have 12 credits, you must select a first and a second semester study hall. If you have 13 credits, you need only select a first OR a second semester of study hall. If you have requested 14 credits, you cannot request a study hall either semester. • To begin the process, you will log on to the Family Access page using either the parent or student access. Follow the steps on the next frame. • Once in family access, you will need to change the tab at the top of the page from the middle school to the high school.

  27. Directions for Completing Registrationcontinued • 1. Go to “Courses for 2009-2010” (left side column) • 2. Click “Update Requests” (Middle of Page) • 3. Highlight each request (Follow your Pink registration worksheet for choices) • 4. Click on “Add Course” • 5. After all courses have been selected, go to “selected” tab to verify choices. • 6. If correct, print this page and attach it to your pink registration sheet. This page must be signed by a parent. • 7. Log out

  28. Final Directions • Please do not request your “alternates” in online registration. Write alternates on the pink page. • Attach the computer print out of your course requests to your pink page.

  29. Signature Page • Your pink registration page must have a student signature and a parent signature. • Bring your completed course request materials with you to the middle school on February 11. • YOUR QUESTIONS??
