  1. Wright Aviation Presents Garmin GNS430W System Basics

  2. Garmin GNS430W This program is a basic introduction to the 430W com/nav/gps unit. It covers: • basic foundational knowledge about the system, • how it is organized, • the primary functions, and • how you use them.

  3. Garmin GNS430W The basics: • The GNS430W combines traditional Com/Nav radios with a GPS navigation system. • It contains Navigational Databases that store a host of information and are updated regularly • It has built in programs which enable the user to access this information, display maps, calculate a variety of things and automatically provide extremely accurate positioning information.

  4. Garmin GNS430W The unit has control knobs on the lower left and right corners which are used for entering and navigating within the unit.

  5. Garmin GNS430W The left side of the unit is essentially a conventional com/nav radio

  6. Garmin GNS430W The right side is the GPS navigational computer.

  7. Garmin GNS430W The RADIO side is straightforward and operates much like any other radio. It has Volume controls for both the COM and the VOR (NAV) Standby and Active windows for both COM and VOR/LOC (VLOC) FLIP switches to move a frequency from the standby to the active window Tuning knobs – big knob for big numbers, little knob for little numbers. ON/OFF switch for the unit itself.

  8. Garmin GNS430W The GPS side contains a graphic display screen surrounded by “function” keys called “SOFT Keys” and, of course, the selector knobs. Our focus will be on these components, what they do and how you utilize them.

  9. Garmin GNS430W Here are the components of the GPS side of the unit: the control knob • Navigates through the screen – scrolls • Used to enter data

  10. Garmin GNS430W Here are the components of the GPS side of the unit: Chapter/page indicator • Displays the Chapter, Number of pages and page on • Used to navigate through data sources

  11. Garmin GNS430W Here are the components of the GPS side of the unit: the soft keys • Serve like function keys – specific purposes • Used to perform frequently repeated things

  12. Garmin GNS430W Here are the components of the GPS side of the unit: the mode display • Automatically displays the navigational “mode” of the unit.

  13. Garmin GNS430W Here are the components of the GPS side of the unit: the range rocker • Alters the range of the map itself • Used to Zoom IN and Zoom OUT

  14. Garmin GNS430W Here are the components of the GPS side of the unit: Gps function message windows • Display status of the function key below it.

  15. Garmin GNS430W The GPS unit keeps track of your location by continuously “triangulating” off the GPS satellites in orbit around the earth. Without getting into the “how” it does this (that can be covered separately if you want), suffice to say that the unit knows where it is in 3 dimensions at all times. With that, it can display that information graphically on a moving map as well as in terms of Latitude/Longitude/Altitude.

  16. Garmin GNS430W It also contains a navigational data base. This database contains all of the programmable information contained in the AFD, VFR and IFR charts, IFR procedures as well as terrain and obstacle information. This information is accessed through the various soft keys and the selector knob.

  17. Garmin GNS430W The SOFT KEYS take you to specific functions including: • FLP – flight plans (press to access/leave) • MSG – messages (press to display) • OBS – Omni bearing selector • CDI – course deviation indicator • ENT – the ENTER key • CLR – the CLEAR or escape key • MENU – the MENU functions available by page • D – Direct to function

  18. Garmin GNS430W The main chapters, which are accessed using the SELECTOR knob are: • Navigation Chapter • Waypoints Chapter • Auxiliary Chapter • Nearest Chapter

  19. Garmin GNS430W Within these four main chapters are a variety of pages. These are organized to enable you to access the information they contain once you’ve learned the architecture of the system. Chapters are always in a set order, starting with Navigation, then Waypoints, Auxiliary and the last chapter is always Nearest. Pages are also always in a set order within a Chapter to facilitate navigating to/from the information.

  20. Garmin GNS430W The NAVIGATION Chapter • Page 1 – “Nav Page” • Page 2 – “Map Page” Added functions get inserted here • Page -4 – “Frequencies Page” • Page -3 – “Position Page” • Page -2 – “Satellite Reception Page” • Page last – “Vertical Navigation Page”

  21. Garmin GNS430W Waypoints Chapter Pages in the waypoint chapter are more like mini, preformatted search windows. They are set up in a consistent order starting with Airports (six pages of information for each airport). That is followed by: • Intersections, • NDBs, • VORs and • User created waypoints.

  22. Garmin GNS430W Waypoints Chapter This chapter serves as a search engine that enables you to locate information about these specific things using their code, name or, in the case of airports, city/state location.

  23. Garmin GNS430W The AUXILIARY Chapter This contains two sets of things • Automatic functions • Timers, calculators, tools • System set up functions • Time/date • Displays • On/off functions such as alarms, messages • System configuration items

  24. Garmin GNS430W The NEAREST Chapter This is extremely important as it automatically displays the nearest _____ to your location. In fact, the nearest 9 _____ to your present location in the case of airports. _____ gets filled in with: Airports, Intersections, NDBs, VORs, User waypoints, ARTCC facilities, Flight Service Stations and Airspace.

  25. Garmin GNS430W This is deliberately located as the LAST chapter so that all one need do is twist the large knob full clockwise (to the right) and you will land in the NEAREST chapter. Twist the knob the other way and land back in the NAV chapter.

  26. Garmin GNS430W Enough of the overview for now, so, let’s go to the simulator for the unit itself and start exploring. ******BRAIN BREAK FIRST******
