  1. Basic Bible Christianity Lesson Thirteen Love your neighbor—Part 1

  2. Search the Scriptures Study Luke 18:18-27. • What question did the man ask? • “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” • What question did Jesus ask in return? • “Why do you call me good?” • What law-based answer did Jesus then give the man? • Obey the commandments. • Why didn’t Jesus say, “Believe in me and you will be saved”? • The man didn’t realize his sin. Lesson 12 Love the Lord Your God

  3. Search the Scriptures • What was the young man’s response? • All these I have kept. • What did Jesus tell the man he still lacked? • Sell everything and give it to the poor. • How did the man respond? • He went away sad. • What did Jesus say about the rich? • It’s difficult for them to enter the kingdom of God. Lesson 12 Love the Lord Your God

  4. Search the Scriptures • What did Jesus illustrate through this dialog? • You can’t get to heaven by keeping the law. • What is the only way to be saved? • Through Jesus Lesson 12 Love the Lord Your God

  5. True or false F T T F T/F • Rich people cannot go to heaven. • The First Commandment is the most important one, because all of the other commandments relate back to it. • Using God’s name to call down condemnation upon someone or something is sinful. • God wants us to use Sunday as the New Testament day of rest so that we have downtime for our bodies. • It’s important to obey the Third Commandment by going to church, even if we don’t want to be there. Lesson 12 Love the Lord Your God

  6. True or false F T F F F • It’s not idolatry to love money and things, as long as we recognize that God gave them. • Idolatry is often reflected in the way we set our priorities, make time commitments, and spend money. • It’s okay to dabble with horoscopes, fortune tellers, palm readers, tarot cards, and Ouija boards, as long as it’s just for fun and we don’t take them seriously. • The most important thing God’s law can do is to show us how to live in a way that pleases God. • The simplest summary of God’s law is wrapped up in the word obedience. Lesson 12 Love the Lord Your God

  7. Questions for discussion Many people recognize that it is wrong to misuse God’s name flagrantly, so they insert words like gosh or dang or heck into their vocabularies. How do such euphemisms still misuse God’s name? The words curse and swear do not mean the same thing. What is cursing in God’s name? What is swearing in the name of God? Lesson 12 Love the Lord Your God

  8. Questions for discussion Your friend is facing surgery and says, “I know things will be all right. I’ve got the best doctor for this procedure.” What reminder can you share with her? God created each of us as a complete being: body, mind, and soul. How does obedience to the Third Commandment bring us blessings on many different levels? Lesson 12 Love the Lord Your God

  9. Basic Bible Christianity Lesson Thirteen Love your neighbor—Part 1

  10. Opening Devotion Read Luke 10:25-37. Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  11. The Fourth Commandment God’s Representatives Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1 Q: The Fourth Commandment protects A: God’s representatives. (At the same time, the Fourth Commandment protects our neighbor’s authority.)

  12. The Fourth Commandment Ephesians 6:1-3 Ephesians 6:1-3—Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise—“that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” God places authority (his representatives) over us in five specific areas: • In the home • We are to honor and obey our parents. Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  13. The Fourth Commandment Ephesians 5:22-25 Ephesians 5:22-25—Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. • In the home • Wives are to submit to husbands. Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  14. The Fourth Commandment Colossians 3:22-25 Colossians 3:22-25—Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything; and do it, not only when their eye is on you and to win their favor, but with sincerity of heart and reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong, and there is no favoritism. • In the workplace we are to honor and obey our masters (bosses, employers). Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  15. The Fourth Commandment Romans 13:1 Romans 13:1—Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. • In the state we are to submit to all levels of government. Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  16. The Fourth Commandment Hebrews 13:7,17 Hebrews 13:7,17—Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you. • In the church we are to honor and obey our church leaders (pastors, elders, teachers). Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  17. The Fourth Commandment Leviticus 19:32 Leviticus 19:32—Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD. • In society in general we are to honor and show respect for our elders (those older than us). Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  18. The Fourth Commandment Acts 4:18-20 Acts 4:18-20—Then they called them in again and commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. But Peter and John replied, “Judge for yourselves whether it is right in God’s sight to obey you rather than God. For we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.” Q: The one exception, when we are not to obey earthly authority, is when A: they command us to do something sinful. Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

Lesson 13 Love Your Neighbor – Part 1

  24. The Fifth Commandment Romans 13:3,4 Romans 13:3,4—Rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority?
