  1. Basic Bible Christianity Lesson Twelve Love the Lord your God

  2. Search the Scriptures • Study 1 Corinthians chapter 5. • What was the sinful situation in Corinth? • A man committing adultery with his father’s wife • How did the Corinthians feel about this sin? • Proud • How should they have felt? • Filled with grief • What should they have done? • Put the man out of their fellowship Lesson 11 Our Spiritual Heartbeat

  3. Search the Scriptures • What did the apostle Paul instruct the Corinthian believers to do? • Hand him over to Satan. • What does yeast do in a batch of dough? • It spreads throughout. • What is meant by the yeast? • Sin (malice and wickedness) • With whom are believers not to associate? • People who call themselves Christians but are sexually immoral, greedy, idolaters or slanderers, drunkards, or swindlers Lesson 11 Our Spiritual Heartbeat

  4. Search the Scriptures • Why? • To convey the seriousness of their sin • How is the church to judge its own? • Based on their words and actions • What were the Corinthians to do with the immoral brother? • Expel him from among them • Why were they to do this? • To lead him to repentance Lesson 11 Our Spiritual Heartbeat

  5. True or false T T T F F Worldly sorrow is not the same thing as true repentance. Repentance is not just sorrow for sin; it is trust in God’s forgiveness of sins, for Jesus’ sake. If anyone is in Christ, he or she is a new creation. Repentance is what a believer does to make up (atone) for his or her sins. The purpose of confessing sins to a pastor or another Christian is to help bring out the shame and embarrassment of sin, so we won’t commit the same sin again. Lesson 11 Our Spiritual Heartbeat

  6. True or false T T T T T With proper authority from God’s Word, one Christian can speak forgiveness in God’s name to another Christian. A person properly excommunicated has no salvation until that person repents of his or her sin. A penitent believer wants others to know of his or her repentance and faith. Public sins should be dealt with in an open, straightforward, and public manner. Repentance is both a lifestyle and something that believers practice through specific steps of confession, absolution, and reconciliation. Lesson 11 Our Spiritual Heartbeat

  7. Questions for discussion You have a friend who claims to be a Christian but is living an openly sinful life. He knows he is willfully and deliberately doing wrong, but he says, “It doesn’t matter that I’m living a deliberately sinful life. Everyone is a sinner. I know I will go to heaven, because I believe in Jesus as my Savior; I believe he died for my sins.” How will you respond to this situation? Lesson 11 Our Spiritual Heartbeat

  8. Questions for discussion Sometimes a person who is excommunicated comes to realize the seriousness of his or her sin and repents of the sin. Can such a person be brought back into the church? If so, what steps should be taken to receive that person back into communion with the church? We are certainly to confess our sins to God and admit our guilt to him. What advantage is there in confessing our sins, especially those that trouble us, to the pastor or to another Christian? Lesson 11 Our Spiritual Heartbeat
