  1. ME 476: 2nd Law Analysis of Engineering Systems Spring 2008 Derek Baker

  2. This Week’s Schedule • Today: Overview of Class • Grading • Assignments • Structure • Thursday: • Class Policies • Begin Review of Non-Reacting Energy Processes (Thermo I) • 25 Şubat (Monday), 17.00: Ethics HW 1 Due • 3 Şubat (Monday), 17.00: Ethics HW 2 Due ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  3. 2nd Law Analysis • Advanced Thermodynamic Analysis • Also Called • Availability Analysis • Exergy Analysis • Active area of thermodynamics • Exergy quantifies part of energy available to do useful work (i.e., quality of energy) ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  4. Exergy: Pollution, Climate Change, Resources ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  5. 2nd Law Analysis • Exergy not conserved. • A thermodynamicallyperfect process • Is completely reversible • Generates no entropy • Destroys/loses no exergy • Generates no pollution/global warming gases • All real processes destroy exergy, which results in • Consumption of non-renewable resources • Pollution • Global warming • Goals: • Quantify exergy destroyed/lost by real processes • Identify processes that destroy/lose the most exergy • Minimize exergy destruction through improved engineering • Thermal design and optimization ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  6. Topics: • Non-Reacting Energy and Exergy Processes • Energy: Review Thermo I • Exergy: Review Thermo II • Non-Reacting Mixtures: Review Thermo II and extend to Exergy • Reacting Mixtures: • Review Thermo II • Extend to Exergy • Exergy, Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow (Thermal Systems) • Economics • Thermoeconomics • Optimization ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  7. Grading • 20% Homework • ½ directly related to project • ½ covers other topics • 25% MT1 • 25% MT2 • 30% Final ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  8. Grading • 20% Homework • ½ directly related to project • ½ covers other topics • 25% MT1 • 25% MT2 • 30% Final • For MTs and Final • ½ Take-home related to project • ½ In-class • ~ 50+% of grade is based on project! ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  9. Quizzes and Attendance • No Quizzes • Attendance taken but not used to calculate final grade • Grading Curve: • Defined by students with good attendance • Not effected by students with poor attendance • Students with good attendance given benefit of doubt • You are responsible for all material I cover in class. • If you miss class without an excuse, do not create extra work for me by asking me what you missed ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  10. Project • Develop model of simple gas turbine engine with heat recovery steam generator • Modeling: MathCad • Not Excel or MatLab • Will teach MathCad in Class • Reports: • ~ 7 total (4 HW, 2 for MT’s and 1 for Final)  1 every 2 weeks • ~ 2 pages each + methodology • Table summarizing results • Graph of results • ~ 1 page of interpretation • Methodology ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  11. Parts to Project • Non-reacting Energy Model • Non-reacting exergy model • Add water injection before combustion (psychrometrics): Energy and Exergy • Combustion + Global Warming • Pollution: NOx generation • Heat recovery steam generator • Economics ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  12. Parts to Project • Non-reacting Energy Model • Non-reacting exergy model • Add water injection before combustion (psychrometrics): Energy and Exergy • Combustion + Global Warming • Pollution: NOx generation • Heat recovery steam generator • Economics ** To do well in this course you must work on project over whole semester!** ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  13. Prior Knowledge • Assume you know • Word, Excel (for graphing and tables) • Can answer individual questions • Assume you know but will review main ideas in class • ME 203, Thermo • ME 204, Thermo II • These classes are Prereqs! • Assume you do not know and will cover in class: • MathCad • Economics • Heat Transfer • Fluid Mechanics ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  14. Selection Criteria • If class fills-up…. • Attendance on Thursday • Cumulative GPA • Complete Ethics HW1 by Monday ME 476 2nd Law Analysis

  15. 2nd Law Analysis of Engineering Systems Questions????? ME 476 2nd Law Analysis
