  1. Welcome to Sixth Grade Curriculum Night! Centennial Elementary 2014-2015

  2. Bell Schedule • 8:10 – 8:45 1st Hour/AR • 8:46 – 10:06 2nd Hour • 10:09 – 11:29 3rd Hour • 11:32 – 12:50 4th Elective/Lunch • 12:52 – 2:13 5th Hour • 2:15 – 3:05 6th Hour (Soc. St.)

  3. Accelerated Reading in first hour • Students read for 35 minutes at the start of the day • Homeroom teachers set goals in the system • Homeroom teachers track progress toward goals • Percentage of goal is a test grade • New goal each quarter

Typical Day in Math • Bell work (DMR = Daily Math Review) • Correct previous night’s homework and answer any questions. • Go over lesson together, take notes and do several examples. • Whiteboard practice (if applicable & time allows) • Independent practice in book (this is the time that I can work with small groups and/or individuals who need extra support and answer questions.) • If there is enough time at the end, I will let students start their homework with the remaining time.

  7. Homework in Math • Students should expect to have homework just about every night for math. • Homework will usually consist of a page from the practice workbook (front and back). • Homework is due the following day at the beginning of class. • Students correct their homework and have the opportunity to ask questions if there were problems that they didn’t understand. • Students will keep all of their math papers in their folder. Periodically I will have students empty folders into their portfolios.

  8. Tutoring • If your child needs tutoring, you can email me to set up appointments. • The only exception would be if I had a meeting that morning, but generally I will be available.

  9. Sixth Grade Email Policy • We love when students use technology, especially when they are trying to get help. We will respond to student emails as long as the parents are CC’d on the original email. • We want to make sure parents are aware that their students needed help, and we also want parents to be kept in the loop with teacher response.

Language Arts with Mr. Morris • Integrated reading and writing genres • Narrative, Summary, Functional text, Poetry, Persuasive text, Research Writing • Real world communication skills with practical applications • Writing in the content areas • Write From the Beginning Based Writing • Novel units with project-based learning. (The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Golden Goblet, Walk Two Moons, Chasing Lincoln’s Killer, Holes, Harriet Tubman)

  12. Reading • The Language of Literature • Books are online • Lit Circles • Based on reading ability • Cooperative Learning • Nightly Homework– read 30 minutes for AR • Writing assignments, unfinished classwork, and projects may also be homework.

  13. Writing • Word Study • Vocabulary, spelling and grammar practice • Writing Assignments • Many will have to be finished for homework • AIMS Scoring rubric • Writing assignments correspond with reading assignments

  14. Backpack • Students should not carry more than they need. • Papers need to be organized in a binder or folder • Teachers have collected classroom supplies for students. Thanks ! • Keep extra notebooks, paper and art supplies at home for homework assignments.

  17. Homework: Science • All homework assignments/test dates are posted on Mrs. Tomerlin’s website calendar • If class work is not completed it will then be homework. (determined by teacher) • Throughout the year projects will be assigned that are to be done outside of class time.

Science Camp-April 22st – 24th • Required Parent Meeting July 31st • Chaperones need Volunteer Tier 3 qualification by December 20st. • Parent chaperones pay approximately $75 (not tax credit) • Cost • Approximately $150 for students which can be paid for using tax credit • Payments Due February, 27th • Can do a payment plan

Science Curriculum Support • The science books that are used will be available online to your student • -www.my.hrw.com • Also direct link on my teacher page under curriculum page • -each student is given a user name and password at the beginning of the year • If needed a copy can be given or emailed upon request
