FACTS • The Nile Crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) cares for its offspring, protecting them and even helping the eggs hatch • They are the largest African crocodile and the 2nd largest crocodile in the world • They average 16 feet long and 500 lbs • The largest Nile Crocodile ever recorded was 20 feet long and 1600 lbs

  3. Extinction • The Nile Crocodile was hunted for its leather heavily during the 1940’s to the 1960’s • It was also hunted because its meat was said to have curative properties • Its habitat is close to the main water source for many people and it poses a threat to them and is feared.

  4. How Can We Help • Disproving the theory it has curative properties • Stopping its poaching for the leather • Keeping it protected and monitoring its population

Why Should We Help • The Nile Crocodile controls populations like many apex predators • If it goes extinct fish like the barbell catfish can overeat other fish • Many animals including humans depend on the fish for food • The Nile Crocodile keeps the ecosystem in balance and its extinction can cause major problems
