  1. Solar Power 500 Project A Plan to Solar Power Our Way to Energy Independence

  2. The Site • Scattered across the southeastern US are approximately 21,000 broiler poultry houses. • These houses are situated east to west with a 500 ft long south facing side. • The south facing side of one house will hold 500 solar panels, which is a 87.5 kw system. • With an average of 5 solar hours a day this system produces 437.5 kwh/day.

  3. Exponential Growth • Suppose solar panels could be installed on the south side of 5000 of these houses. • Then suppose all revenue from the sale of electricity from these 5000 houses could be used to panel new houses. • Assuming it takes 10 years for a solar system to pay for itself, the income from the sale of electricity from 5000 houses should add a new house to the project every 17.5 hours.

  4. 30 Year Projection

  5. 30 Year Projection

  6. 30 Year Projection

  7. Points to note • Using the fact than a system can pay for itself in 10 years it is expected that at the end of this period the number of houses would be doubled to 10,000. • Because houses were added every 17.5 hours from the beginning of year 1 and immediately begin producing revenue there are actually 12955 houses at the end of year 10. • Almost 3,000 additional houses or 60% of the beginning number are paid for by the sun.

  8. Points to note • Had the project only doubled at the end of the next 10 years there would be a total of 25,910 systems. There are a total of 33,481 systems in the project at the end of year 20. • An additional 7571 systems were added from year 10 to 20. More than double the 2,955 systems that were paid for by the sun in the first 10 years.

  9. Surrendering Systems • At the end of year 20 the original 5000 systems must be surrendered to the poultry farmers. • This surrender has the effect of reducing the total number of systems at the end of year 20 from 33,481 systems to 28,481 systems. • Due to the large number of systems the project recovers in 2 years. • Surrenders after year 20 begin at 500 for year 21 and increase each year but due to the size of the project these surrenders do not have a large effect.

  10. Investments • At $6000/kw one 87.5 kw system will cost $525,000 to construct. • The original 5000 systems will cost $2,625,000. • At the end of year 20 the projected 33,481 systems will generate (at 10 cents /kWh) $527,300,000 year. • At the end of year 30 the projected 61,000 systems will generate $960,750,000 per year and supply electricity for 366,000 households.
