  2. I. Prosperity • The US and SC made lots of money during WWI. • Farmers make more b/c crop prices increase. • Many people began to buy lots of stuff. • Cotton prices fall b/c of overproduction and losing overseas markets.

  3. II. New Technology • Improvements were good for urban life, not so much farmers. • Water and sanitation systems were built in cities. • Trolleys and cars helped transportation. • Electricity became available in towns & cities b/c of dams.

  4. III. Tourism • Tourism was used to help boost SC’s economy. • Hotels opened in Charleston. • Historical preservation in Charleston also takes off. • New highways and cars made it easier for Yankees to come visit beaches and nice weather.

  5. IV. Prohibition • Prohibition was more trouble than good in SC just like everywhere else. • It created bootleggers and led to more crime. • KKK members started going after bootleggers b/c they didn’t like them breaking the law.

  6. V. Mass Media • Mass media helped SC. • 1st radio station in SC went on the air in Charleston in 1930. • People listened to radios and went to the movies. • Dance crazes and the latest music became popular.

  7. VI. Wasteland of thought? • Many people said that SC was a cultural wasteland with nothing to offer. • Southern Literary Renaissance tried to celebrate and promote SC’s heritage. • Julia Peterkin won a Pulitzer Prize for Literature. • DuBose Heyward wrote Porgy.

  8. VI. Wasteland of thought? • AAs took part in the Harlem Renaissance as well. • Raised up and gave recognition to black artists and musicians. • Radio helps spread jazz music to whites as well as blacks. • It asked questions about the place AAs held in American culture.

  9. VII. Ku Klux Klan • The Ku Klux Klan grew during the 1920s. • The Birth of a Nation showed the KKK as a good thing. • Led to racism going up around the country. • Immigrants, radicals, and Catholics were all targeted by the KKK. • It grew in size and strength during the 1920s throughout the US.
