By administering this controlled shock, the device interrupts the chaotic electrical activity in the heart, allowing it to re-establish a normal rhythm. Types of Defibrillators 1. Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs): Designed for use by laypersons with minimal training, AEDs are portable devices commonly found in public spaces like airports, schools, and sports facilities. They automatically analyze the heart's rhythm and, if necessary, deliver a shock. AEDs provide clear, step-by-step voice instructions, guiding users through the process, making them invaluable in emergency situations. 2. Manual External Defibrillators: Primarily utilized by healthcare professionals in hospital settings, these devices require the operator to interpret the patient's heart rhythm and determine the appropriate voltage and timing for the shock. They offer greater control and are typically integrated into advanced cardiac life support protocols. 3. Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (ICDs): These are surgically implanted devices that continuously monitor the heart's rhythm. Upon detecting a dangerous arrhythmia, an ICD automatically delivers a shock to restore normal rhythm. ICDs are often recommended for individuals at high risk of sudden cardiac arrest due to underlying heart conditions. 4. Wearable Cardioverter-Defibrillators (WCDs): WCDs are external devices worn by patients who are at temporary risk for sudden cardiac arrest but may not be immediate candidates for an ICD. They monitor the heart continuously and deliver a shock if a life-threatening arrhythmia is detected. Importance of Defibrillators in Cardiac Arrest Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death worldwide. During SCA, the heart's electrical system malfunctions, causing it to beat irregularly or stop altogether. Immediate intervention with a defibrillator can significantly increase the chances of survival.
