  2. SEO AUDIT An SEO audit is a time-consuming and elaborate process. SEO auditors evaluate how search engine friendly a website is. It considers on-page and off-page factors that consider the crawl-ability, indexability, and quality score of the website. I answered some frequently asked questions regarding SEO site audit here. However, regardless of the website’s size, you should expect two things from an SEO site audit: After understanding the basics of SEO auditing and knowing the necessary tools for a successful site audit, you should now prepare your audit checklist. This article aims to simplify Matt Jackson’s Basic Audit Checklist. Before you start auditing, you should remember this: time, money, and effort invested for an audit depends on the size of your website. 1 A detailed analysis of the current state of your website 2 A list of actions based on the audit checklist

  5. ON PAGE SEO SITE AUDIT CHECKLIST For today, I will focus on the first part of the basic SEO site audit to make this article shorter. I will write another article that will focus on the off-page factors next time.

ON-PAGE AUDIT 1 HTTPS / www. -301 Redirects 301 redirects pass search engine value, 302 redirects do not Make sure the alternatives all 301 redirect to the main version Use this free redirect checker tool to check that status Note: variations that do not redirect or redirect with 302 should be noted Homepage Canonical Prevent duplicate and indexing by having a canonical t show the true version of the homepage

Add to the homepage template in the head: <link rel= “canonical” href=”https://domain.com/” /> Note: If the canonical is missing, add a note of the correct tag and how to implement it Brand Name Search / site:domain.com = Homepage First Search for the brand name (+ modifier) and make sure that the website page that shows first is the homepage Search for site:domain.com and also make sure the homepage is first Note: If the homepage is not shown first, mark it for later investigation

  8. 2 Crawl Issues Identify blocked URLs, 404 errors, redirect chains, missing title pages / meta descriptions / H1’s / Search Console / Analytics code Use Screaming Frog Go to the “Response Codes” section Click “Blocked by Robots.txt” Note: If anything is blocked that shouldn’t be, add a note to remove the block from the robots.txt file Go to the “Client error 4xx” Click on export and save it to your folder Note: Add a note to fix all errors with redirects or other correct URLs

Go to “Page Titles” Export all missing page titles Note: Mark that the pages are missing key on-page elements Go to “Meta Descriptions” Export all missing meta descriptions Note: Mark that the pages are missing key on- page elements Go to “Search Console” Export missing GSC Data Note: Mark that the pages are missing key on-page elements Go to “H1’s” Export all missing H1’s Note: Mark that the pages are missing key on- page elements Go to “Directives” Export those with missing canonicals Note: Mark that the pages are missing key on-page elements Go to “Analytics” Export missing GA Data Note: Mark that the pages are missing key on-page elements Click on “Noindex” Note: Mark all noindex pages that shouldn't be and recommend the tag to be removed

  10. 2 Site Speed Check the site speed Use GTmetrix or Pingdom Note: Any issues found and mark down the priority to get it fixed Check crawl rates Note: Any significant downward pages per day trend should be investigated, offer potential solutions 4 Search Consolete Speed Check mobile usability Note: Any pages with errors while checking with Google mobile page tester should be noted Check the index status section Note: Any decline in indexing should be analysed and noted Check sitemap errors Note: Any significant errors in the sitemaps should be fixed Check structured data Note: Any errors and possible cause and solution should be noted

  11. CONCLUSION Both on-page and off-page site audits are important. The on-page audit takes more time than the off-page audit. It is more complex which is why I wrote about it first.
