Project Title: NSIT - Land Surface Moisture and Water Budget Studies Using Microwave Remote Sensing Principal Investigator: Eni G. Njoku (eni.g.njoku@jpl.nasa.gov) Science issue:Characterize land surface moisture space/time variability and role in surface fluxes Approach: Evaluate space-based soil moisture products; compare with models and in-situ data; integrate current and near-future satellite observations Satellite data:AMSR-E, TMI, ERS, SMOS, Aquarius Other data:IGBP, SRTM, SCAN, CPC, NARR Models:GLDAS, NCEP, ECMWF Study particulars: Calibration, retrieval algorithms, surface heterogeneity, vegetation sensitivity, scaling Project Status: Year 1 & 2 (complete): – Acquire and process multi-sensor passive datasets; multiyear intercomparisons and evaluations over U.S. Year 3: – Global intercomparisons, active (scatterometer) and passive datasets; variability, trends and statistics; heterogeneity and spatial scaling studies Year 4 & 5: – Integrate surface moisture/water products and analyses; test applicability to surface flux studies; NEWS IP task - assessments for land surface water NEWS Linkages:(pull, push, collaborate, external) Olson – (POC) Latent heating, microwave sensing Famiglietti – (POC) GLDAS & GRACE intercomparisons NEWS Integration Project #1 – Co-lead NDIC – Data sets Collaborate w.
