4. The table to the right (2011) shows that more than half the world’s population live in towns and cities, but the urban population is higher in more developed countries than in less developed countries • In developing countries many more people make a living from farming whereas in developed countries most jobs are in offices, services and factories

5. Population in 1950 Population in 2011 By comparing the figures from the table above, we can see that the number of people living in cities has increased a lot since 1950 – this trend is called urbanisation All over the world it is becoming more popular for people to move to cities

6. Task One • Copy the two tables showing the difference in urban and rural population between 1950 and 2011 • Underneath them write a paragraph describing what is happening

7. Why do people move to the city? Push Factor – factors that encourage people to move away from their home Pull Factor – factors about a place that encourage people to move there

8. Reasons for people moving from the countryside to the cities: Pull Factors: • Better education and health care • More and better services – shops, entertainment etc. • Job opportunities • Better variety of housing Push Factors: • Increased population not enough land to farm • Natural disasters • Poor services inc. lack of sewage disposal, electricity and water

10. Task Two • Make a poster about the push and pull factors affecting people moving from the countryside to the cities • Include pictures and diagrams with colour

12. Task Three • Using the map of the world that you will be given along with an atlas and the following table, label the world’s top 10 megacities

Homework: • Choose one of the Megacities from the list • Write a report on this city including the following information: • Where the city is in the World • Its population • Is it developed or developing? • Provide information about its services, e.g. housing, healthcare, jobs etc. • Is it a mix of rich and poor areas? Give details • What is its main industry?
