Mathematics • In the mid to late 1600’s, Newton made many mathematical discoveries • Discoveries included Binomial Theorem, new methods for expansion of infinite series, and direct and inverse method of fluxions (fluxional calculus) • His discoveries contributed to analytical geometry, algebra, and calculus. • Fluxions were one his most important contributions to physics. • A fluxion represents the rate of change of a 'fluent'--a continuously changing or flowing quantity, such as distance, area, or length.

Optics • Newton studied optics at the University of Cambridge. • Performed experiments on the composition of light • Discovered that visible white light is heterogeneous. • White light is composed of all primary colors • Can be broken down into ROYGBIV by a spectroscope. • Concluded that white light is secondary • It can be separated by prisms • Demonstrated that colors of the spectrum can be observed and quantifiable 'degree of Refrangibility.'

Other Contributions • The Optiks is Newtons most comprehensible and readily accessible piece of work pertaining to light and color. • Newton’s most widely read work • As a result of the Optiks he formulated the Corpuscular Theory which say that light was composed in discrete particles moving in straight lines. • Newton’s masterpiece, The Principia was divided into 3 books. It is currently known as the Laws of Motion. • It is known as one of the most powerful and influential treatise ever published
