Synopsis

Has your office ever suffered from “black box syndrome” ? Have you ever had to explain why design progress has flat lined ? At least on the board everyone can see what’s going on, and we can issue lots of paper.

This presentation offers some simple, yet scientific ideas to help progress and control 3D CAD projects. It will show how the status of the model should be linked to key milestones and to the quality of the supporting information.

Purpose of Presentation

  • Demonstrate one proven scientific method exists, that works for us.
  • Encourage input from and build confidence for Clients, Project Management, Project Controls, and Construction.
  • Provide a forum for debate and capture other ideas on best practice in this area.

  • Database set-up - 5%.
  • Civil/Structural/Undergrounds - 23%
  • Piping - 43%
  • Isometrics - 1%

Establish quality weightings :

Progress input against estimated quantities, then apply a factors to reflect the quality of information available :-

  • Status of P&ID’s ( 10%, 50%, 75%, 95%, 100%)
  • Status of equip. data ( 10%, 50%, 75%, 95%, 100%)
  • Status of design verification: material checks, clash check, design reviews, stress analysis.

Never stand still, continuously review for improvements and best practice :-

  • Measurement of C/S/A & E&I.
  • Automate into Project Control systems.
  • Cultural change to review model not paper.
  • Extend method into the construction.

Measurement is not a substitute for experience.
