SEXUALISED MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA AMONGST TEENS TEENS ONLINE – WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON Key Statistics to be aware of: • 93% of teens aged 12 – 17 go online • 69% of teens have their own computer in their room • 63% of teen who go online are on everyday • 27% of teens use their phone to go online • 24% of teens with a game console use it to go online

SEXUALISED MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA AMONGST TEENS SOCIAL NETWORK – FACEBOOK • 73% of all teens are on a social network • Teens have an average of 201 friends online • Teens aged 13 – 17 spend an average of 2 hours online – 80% is on a social network • In the US, over 7.5 million Facebook users are under the age of 13.

SEXUALISED MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA AMONGST TEENS WHAT DOES THIS MEAN? • This isn’t a question of if my child/teen is online but rather when. • Almost ¾ of teens have access to the internet in the privacy of their own room • 1/4 of our children/teens are equipped with a roaming internet device • ¾ of teens are using social media – primarily Facebook

WHAT HAPPENS ON FACEBOOK? • 86% of teens online comment on ‘friends’ walls • 83% comment on ‘friends’ pictures • 66% send private messages to ‘friends’ • 58% send IM or text messages using the site • 52% send group messages • 55% of teens have given out personal info. to someone they don’t know incl. photos and physical descriptions • 29% of teens have posted mean info, embarrassing photos or spread rumours about someone • 29% have been stalked or contacted by a stranger or someone they didn’t know. • 24% have had private or embarrassing info made public against their will

SEXUALISED MEDIA AND SOCIAL MEDIA AMONGST TEENS ACCESSING EXPLICIT MATERIAL • The average age of a child finding explicit material online is 11 • 90% of 8 – 16 year olds exposed to pornography are exposed to it whilst doing homework online • ‘Sex’ and ‘Porn’ were included in the top 5 most searched items on the internet
