  1. Tier 2 Training LRDW

  2. First the Oracle !

  3. The Oracle • A relational database management system (RDBMS) software from the Oracle Corporation • Manages different types of data, including tables and spatial data (like our SDE files) • It uses the SQL (Spatial Query Language) only • It manages more than just our ArcSDE, as IExpense is run under a type of Oracle database software

  4. The Oracle and our GIS Data Mr. Oracle SLKUX 3 SLKUX 4 SLKUX 10 SLKUX12 SLKUX 1 LRDW Provincial SDE Local warehouse Regional SDE Other GIS data (Many of These)

  5. Questions?

  6. The LRDW • The Land and Resource Data Warehouse (LRDW) stores our GIS provincial data • The server runs on an ArcSDE software by ESRI that can be managed by the Oracle database • The LRDW consist of SDE feature class (actual spatial data) and SDE tables. • When you see feature class it means it is some sort of geodatabase supported format. • The big advantage of SDE files is that multi user can edit the file at once allowing it to be like a “live data” • Most SDE feature class file (we will call it SDE layer for now) is govern by a data custodian

  7. The LRDW (continue) • The layers does not have topology, although it can be implemented • The SDE layer might have a different update time because different custodians has different ways of managing their data • SDE feature tables can be linked with the SDE layer files to give additional information • This can only be done if you know which SDE layer will link with which SDE table • LRDW can be linked by many different software like iMapBC, ArcCatalog/ArcMap, Mineral Titles Online, ILRR etc.

  8. Questions?

  9. Connecting to LRDW • There are three ways to connect to LRDW in ArcMap/ArcCatalog • One is through Database Connection in ArcCatalog • One is through add data from ArcMap • One is through the TSAT bar extension in ArcMap • TSAT bar is a little different because it is not a direct link to LRDW

  10. Connecting to LRDW from ArcCatalog

  11. Connecting to LRDW from ArcMap Double click on LRDW and it will prompt for password Choose Database connection from list

  12. Connecting from TSAT bar in ArcMap After you press OK, it will prompt for password Adding files from TSAT

  13. LRDW Data • The LRDW has its own naming convention that they need to follow when they input the file • This means you might not understand the file names There are 709 of these layers inside LRDW at the moment excluding the tables

  14. So how do we understand what those names mean ? • Somebody created a lot of layer files • Renamed many of the LRDW SDE files so people could understand • They also group some layer files (.lyr) together, as well as change symbologies and queries on these layer files • They created many of these layer files and stored them in P:\corp\layer_library • These layer files are the same layer you see in iMap and TSAT

  15. TSAT layers names Vs. LRDW names • TSAT layer file calls this file • Known Fish Observations – Salmon • LRDW root file is called • WHSE_FISH.FISS_FISH_OBSRVTN_PNT_SP • The TSAT layer file query Salmon only from the LRDW file, but the LRDW file itself might contain other fish species as well

  16. LRDW layer files Layer files in ArcCatalog Layer files in iMap BC

  17. Connecting to LRDW TSAT P:Corp LRDW ArcCatalog

  18. LRDW • There is no secret in connecting to LRDW from TSAT, its just basically redirecting its root to P:\corp\layer_library • TSAT might not connect to every single file in LRDW, but ArcCatalog does, so keep that in mind • Many programs are created to connect to LRDW, and they are in most cases displayed differently
