  1. Tier 2 Training ArcGIS Basics

What is ArcGIS ? • It is a package from ESRI (Environmental System Research Institute) that has a group of GIS software • There are different software packages, but we are using one of these packages inside a GTS session • There are a few software inside, and some of them are dependent on each other. • Current ArcGIS version is 9.2 (we have 9.1 and 9.2 available)

Which software do we need to be concern about ? • There are three common software which you will be expose to hearing the most. • ArcMap, ArcCatalog, and ArcInfo Workstation • ArcMap and ArcCatalog are more dependent on each other • ArcInfo Workstation is more an independent program • You will be only working with ArcMap/ArcCatalog

What’s the difference between them ? • ArcInfo Workstation is mostly a command line (typing) GIS program, whereas ArcMap/Arc Catalog are more of a visual (clicking) GIS program • There are differences between the capabilities that a visual program offers over a command line, and vice versa (All you have to know is that it exists) • Basically ArcInfo Workstation has been there for a much longer time before ArcMap was created.

Licenses ? • There are 3 licenses for most ArcGIS packages, which are ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo • GTS only has 2 licenses, ArcView and ArcInfo. • ArcInfo license is 3 times more expensive than ArcView. • ArcView license is like seeing half the world. Where ArcInfo license unlocks the secrets to the universe.

ESRI Spatial Data Format Discrete Data • Coverage (1983) – shared geometry topology model (container) • Shapefile (1994) - no topology • Geodatabase (1999) – coincident geometry topology (container) Discrete/Continuous Data (Raster Formats) • GRID Each spatial data format has its own benefits and limitations, so it is best to know what program you are working with.

  10. Data Types • When you break down any spatial data format into its geometric feature, it can only be one of the 3 spatial data types. • It can only be either a point, line or polygon. • That means you cannot have a feature file that contains both lines and polygons.

  11. Which Format works on which Software ?

Data Format Shapefile • This is the format which you will be sharing your files with other people the most because it is only one feature, and not a container. • This is the file format that iMap, BaseMap Online Store, ILRR will take for uploading only. • A Shapefile consists of several files including: • .dbf (tables) • .prj (projection if it has one) • .shp (geometry) • .shx, .sbx (geometry index) A Shapefile

Data Format Geodatabase • Personal Geodatabase (9.0 – 9.1) • File Geodatabase (9.2) • Arc SDE (Corporate Geodatabase) • Any point, line, or polygon file that is inside a Geodatabase is called a feature class • Its essentially a container that can do a lot more analysis than a shape file can do (more and more). • Yes, Geodatabase formats are like another way of unlocking the secrets to the universe.

Layer File ? • Basically a file that directs (point) to another file. • It can direct to any spatial data format, including Shapefile, Coverage, and Geodatabase. • It is very useful to create a layer file that directs to some other path than saving the file into your workspace. • You can’t save the whole LRDW .sde file into your workspace because it is a large 4 gigabyte per file; however, you can save a layer file that directs it back to the LRDW original location. • You can query certain parts of the file into your layer file (very useful). • It is a very small file, since it does not store the data itself.

  15. VRI.sde Only renamed the file VRI_BC.lyr This file here can be any data format Queried only For St James area and renamed the file Fort_St_James_VRI.lyr Queried only for Prince George area and renamed the file PG_VRI.lyr

  16. Data Format Colour in ArcCatalog • Shapefiles are green • Coverages are yellow • Geodatabase files are gray • Layer files are yellow
