  2. Agenda • A quick overview of new standards: • Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in Social Studies (NGSS-SS) • Pacing Guides • EOC – End of the year course examinations • Co-curricular programs and competitions

  3. Social Studies CBC – current curricula until 2012 Components I. Geographic Understanding II. Historical Awareness III. Civic Responsibility IV. Economic Understanding V. Cultural Awareness VI. Global Perspective These components or unifying themes, are found in all courses, grades K-12.

Current Social Studies Curriculum • 8th U.S. History • 9th World History • 11th American History • 12th Government/ Economics • A wide-range of electives are also offered at the middle and senior high levels; e.g., law studies, psychology, sociology. • K- My Family and Others • 1st Families Far and Near • 2nd Communities • 3rd Our Cultures • 4th Florida History • 5th U.S. History • 6th Geography • 7th Civics

  5. Social Studies Curriculum beginning 2012 school year K: Living, Learning, and Working Together 1st Grade: Our Community and Beyond 2nd Grade: Who We Are As Americans 3rd Grade: The U.S. Regions and Its Neighbors 4th Grade: Florida Studies 5th Grade: U.S. History- up to 1850

  6. Social Studies Curriculum beginning 2012 school year 6th Grade: World History- Early Civilizations to the Ancient and Classical Civilizations of Africa, Asia, and Europe. 7th Grade: Civics 8th Grade: U.S. History- Exploration to Reconstruction

Social Studies Curriculum beginning 2012 school year 9th Grade - World History - Middle Ages to the Present (typically taught in the 9th grade) 11th Grade – U.S. History - Reconstruction to the Present Day 12th grade) - Economics - Study of Macro and Micro Economics (typically taught for ½ year in 12th grade).

  8. Social Studies 2012 • Summer 2012 • New materials in schools: • Beginning of School Year 2012 • Next Generation Sunshine State • Standards will be in full effect.

  9. “At a glance”changes for2012 • The following social studies courses and grade level course descriptions can be downloaded from the Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills website, http://socialsciences.dadeschools.net/, under “Curriculum Documents- NGSSS-SS Course Descriptions.” • Grades K-3; • Grade 6- World History; • Grade 9- World History; and • Grade 11- U.S. History. • Teachers teaching these grade levels/courses should access the new benchmarks to begin infusing them into their social studies instruction where appropriate.

How is the District preparing for change • New Social Studies Pacing Guides are now available for the following grade levels/courses and should be used to guide instruction as the official District Curriculum: • 4th Grade- Florida Studies • 5th Grade- U.S. History (Exploration through 1850) • 7th Grade- Civics • 8th Grade- U.S. History (Exploration through the Civil War) • 12th Grade- U.S. Government • 12th Grade- Economics • New Guides: can be downloaded from the Division of Social Sciences and Life Skills website, http://socialsciences.dadeschools.net/, under “Curricular Document- NGSSS-SS Pacing Guides.”
