This project aims to build capacity at the University of Namibia, focusing on research supporting the CBNRM program for sustainable natural resources management in rural communities. Objectives include conducting research, capacity building, strengthening partnerships, and enhancing governance. The project period is from March 2005 to February 2008.

INSTITUTIONAL SUPPORT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF NAMIBIA (UNAM) TO BUILD CAPACITY AND CONDUCT RESEARCH IN SUPPORT OF THE CBNRM PROGRAMME • Organisation Name: Life Sciences Division (LSD) Multidisciplinary Research and Consultancy Centre (MRCC) University of Namibia (UNAM) • Project Period: 01 March 2005 – 28 February 2008.
Project Goal: • To contribute to the quality (improved livelihood of rural communities) of life of the rural Namibians through sustainable natural resources management
Objectives: • to conduct research in priority thematic areas in different conservancies • to strengthen capacity building and training initiatives of the CBNRM research programmes • to further support activities of the Research Working Group • to strengthen networking and partnerships with key players in the CBNRM arena (locally, regionally and internationally
Objective 1: To conduct CBNRM research in the country that will generate necessary information for decision making and advice policy formulation. • Improved knowledge on the institutional and governance issues in communal conservancies • Capacity of communal conservancy strengthened to perform their own planning, resulting in a sustainable planning tool being place • Improved understanding on the CBNRM impacts on livelihoods of beneficiaries • Policy recommendations generated to direct the linkages between Land Reform and the CBNRM programme
Objective 2: To strengthen capacity building and training initiatives of the CBNRM research programmes. • Students equipped with applied research methodologies and other research related activities • Competencies developed among students and community members data collection techniques • Capacity of conservancies to make decisions strengthened through information • Increased knowledge among researchers on different CBNRM aspects • Improved efficiency and effectiveness in terms of production of up to standard publications
Objective 3: To further support the activities of the Research Working Group • The information base of the National CBNRM programme is increased • Post graduate students given opportunity to conduct research • Dissemination of CBNRM findings regionally/internationally.
Objective 4: To strengthen networking and partnerships with key players in the CBNRM arena (locally, regionally and internationally) • Increased new linkages with various institutions to contribute effectively to the CBNRM programme • New ideas into CBNRM
