What is Tetanus?

Tetanus is a serious infection caused by bacteria infection attacking your nervous system. The bacteria u201cClostridium tetaniu201d produces the nerve toxin resulting in tetanus. The condition causes muscle contractions, especially in the jaw and neck muscles. Tetanus can cause breathing problems and lead to a condition called u201clockjawu201d. The bacteria are found in the soil and animal and human intestines. The infection can remain dormant for years before it becomes active. <br><br>Thanks to vaccines tetanus is now a preventable disease. Mortality is high in neonatal babies, pregnant women, and the elderly. There is no cure for tetanus. Treatment focuses on managing the symptom until the tetanus toxins lessen.
