  1. No Sign Save One for this Evil Generation Mark 8:10-13; Matt 16:1-4

  2. Mark 8:10 And straightway he entered into a ship with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

  3. Mark 8:11 • And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, tempting him.

  4. A Sign from Heaven They don’t want another miracle that the prophets of old have also performed—they want an apocalyptic sign from God.

  5. They were not there when a voice from heaven spoke authenticating that Jesus was the Father’s Beloved Son. Matthew 3

  6. They were not there when the Apostles Peter, James, and John heard a voice from heaven authenticating that Jesus was God’s Son. Matthew 17

  7. Turn to 2 Peter 1:16-18 Eyewitnesses of His Majesty

  8. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heavenwe heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.

  9. Mark 8:12 This is the frustration of God! • And he sighed deeply in his spirit,

  10. But Someone Asks: Why was God sighing deeply—He knew people would reject Him.

  11. Consider This The fact that you know the alarm clock is going to go off at 5a—doesn’t change your reaction at 5a.

  12. Genesis 6:6 • And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.

  13. For a More Complete Understanding of what Christ Said Let’s Look at Matt 16:1-4

  14. Matthew 16:1-2 • The Pharisees also with the Sadducees came, and tempting desired him that he would shew them a sign from heaven. • He answered and said unto them, When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red.

  15. Matthew 16:3 • And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. • O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

  16. Here Christ Addresses plain old-fashioned reasoning

  17. Reasoning • the drawing of inferences or conclusions through the use of reason • Merriam-Webster

  18. Our Faith In Christ Is NOT stupid, blind, ignorant, or foolish—it is more than reasonable.

  19. Mark 8:12 • And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek after a sign?

  20. I’ll tell you why they wanted a sign: What if Christ was not the Messiah and they gave up all to follow Him w/o needing to do so?

  21. How many Christians are hedging their bets? I have got to be a Christian just in case there really is a God, but…

  22. Matthew 16:4 The self-righteous Pharisees are called wicked and adulterous. • A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign;

  23. The OT is packed full of examples of God calling Israel a harlot—whatabout me?

  24. Matthew 16:4 1 At this point lots of “signs” had been given to both Jews and Gentiles—so Christ must be speaking of some over the top demonstration that would remove the need for faith! • and there shall no sign be given unto it,

  25. But GOD has chosen NOT to remove the faith component for anyone.

  26. Faith Is A Must • Adam had to believe in a coming Messiah • Noah had to believe in the potential of a global flood • Abraham had to believe in a child of promise • Isaac had to believe in the power of the resurrection • Job too believed that he would be resurrected

  27. Job 19:26 Look at this faith: • And though after my skin worms destroy this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God:

  28. Look @ Matthew 16:4 See the goodness of God. See the grace of God.

  29. Matthew 16:4 Even after such a strong rebuke we still see GRACE. • and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.

  30. Think About the Ark and Grace

  31. What is the sign of Jonah? Matthew 12:39-40

  32. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: • For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale’s belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

  33. The Sign is the Gospel The message of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus the Christ

  34. 1 Corinthians 15:1-4 The Gospel

  35. Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

  36. A Wicked and Adulterous Generation Gets No Sign Save One and that is the Gospel.

  37. John 2:18-19 • Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things? Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

  38. From the death, burial, and resurrection, the resurrectionis the most important. Let’s go back to what Jesus said about ignoring the signs of the times.

  39. Matthew 16:2-3 When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowring. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times?

  40. God’s Expect Us to Reason Before we review the resurrection—Let me give you another example of reasoning.

  41. Let me say it this way: O you idiots, you can discern that an iPhone didn’t come from a cosmic explosion in an Apple laboratory, but you think the Universe came from a Big Bang!

  42. Reasoning Resurrection

  43. If Jesus did not rise from the grave why was the tomb empty?

  44. If Jesus did not rise from the grave why didn’t the Jews produce the body? Christ’s body would still have a pierced side all could recognize

  45. If the tomb was not empty why was a cover story about the disciples stealing the body circulating?

  46. If Jesus did not rise from the grave what accounts for the Apostles significant change in boldness and passion for Christ?

  47. If Jesus did not rise from the grave what accounts for the Apostle Paul’s conversion to Christianity?

  48. If Jesus did not rise from the grave what accounts for James, Jesus’ unbelieving brother, becoming the leader of the Jerusalem at church?

  49. 1 Corinthians 15:14-15 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

  50. If Christ did not rise from the grave how do we account for the 1000s of people involved in hand-copying a lie 1000s of times into multiple languages for 1400 years.
