  1. Who are these famous men? What do they have in common? Answers on following slides....

  2. Martin Luther King: 1960s civil rights campaigner.

  3. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.“ I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood. I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice. I have a dream today! What are the sections in red? What do they add to the sentence?

  4. Nelson Mandela: South African political campaigner.

  5. We first broke the law in a way which avoided any recourse to violence; when this form was legislated against, and then the government resorted to a show of force to crush opposition to its policies, only then did we decide to answer violence with violence. During my lifetime I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die. What are the sections in red? What do they add to the sentence?

  6. Barack Obama: first black U.S. President.

  7. America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations. What are the sections in red? What do they add to the sentence?

  8. 2. What do they have in common? • They are all famous black historical figures. • They are/were all great and powerful speakers. • They all added power to their speeches by using punctuation such as commas, semi-colons and exclamation marks.
