    • MB-OFDM MAC enhancement summary delivered as part of confirmation no vote response [15-03-0343-01] – see attached.
    • Key message: transparency to 15.3 MAC for default modes, where value-add enhancements for MB-OFDM band management, etc. to be drafted in detail as part of 15.3a project are optional
  • Today
    • There are no changes to the MB-OFDM IEEE 15.3a PHY proposal since Sept. 2003 that would prevent the MB-OFDM PHY proposal from supporting the 15.3 MAC specification

  • Multi-band OFDM PHY has default modes
    • Band management is part of an optional value-add story
  • MAC functional behavior can stay the same as before
    • E.g., rate selection and capability probing mechanics are unchanged

  • As per MAC convention, chosen by index
    • Associated to 4 bits defined in PHY header
    • Rate is independent of band management!!

  • Uses same rate capability bits as before
    • Described in 15.3, section 7.4.11

Value-add enhancements

Band management / frequency agility

  • Multi-band OFDM inherently suitable for performing controlled frequency agility
    • Selective usage of bands
      • Great for “good neighbor” behavior or regulatory configuration
    • Bands can be punctured to address severe near-far scenarios
  • Optional enhancements to be developed:
    • Primitives to support local and remote band assessment on a per band basis (RSSI, LQI)
    • Primitives to support band usage on a per piconet basis
    • Primitives to support code puncturing on a per stream basis
    • Band capability bit definitions for 7.4.11

Value-add enhancements

MAC support for Ranging

  • Ranging option requires a new MAC command
    • Ranging request/response
    • Includes sequence numbers
  • New MLME primitives needed to initiate request and obtain response
