SYLLABUS • Textbook – “A Guide to Wellness”, Glencoe/McGraw, Hill Publishing, Mission Hills, California, 2003. • Objective – To develop awareness of the need for good health through the teaching of various topics covering the areas of physical, mental, and social health. • Topics – • Decision-making, risk taking, prevention techniques. • Nutrition • Mental Health, stress coping skills • Infectious diseases and disease prevention • First Aid, CPR • Family Life (relationships, communication skills, STD’s, AIDS, teen pregnancy) • Substance Abuse • “Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program” – State Highway Patrol Program • Academic, Knowledge, and Skills (AKS) – Objectives for Health are found on page 122 and 123 of the Gwinnett County AKS Handbook or GCPS website • Supplies – A folder with front and back pockets is preferred. • Grading – • Unit Tests: 35% • Final Exams: 20% • Classwork/Homework 35% (notebook, daily work, group work, current events when assigned, etc) • Special Projects 10% • Absences – • If a student has an excused absence from school, it is the students’ responsibility to ask for makeup work. A student has five days from the date of his/her initial return to school in which to complete all make-up work. Unexcused absences cannot be made up.

Article must be attached to summary • (10 point deduction). • 3. Article must be health related (no crime reports, advertisements, etc). • 4. Name on summary and article. • FAQ: • 1. What if I do not have internet? • Can use newspaper, magazine. • 2. What if I do not get newspaper? • Use old newspapers from school • library. • 3. What if my printer runs out of ink? • Does not matter, do not procrastinate.
