  1. ITOBOInformation & Communication Technology for Sustainable & Optimised Building Operation SRC OVERVIEWProf. Karsten MenzelUniversity College Cork

  2. In Jan 2006 the Chair of IT in AEC was established at UCC (Bauinformatik [germ.]: Information Technology in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) to cluster interdisciplinary research and teaching activities. to deliver the platform for industry-university research projects and technology transfer. to contribute to the establishment of a sound body of knowledge in applied informatics in AEC. to enable (prospective) engineers and architects to design, operate, maintain, & demolish built artefacts efficiently to deliver high quality engineering systems to end users. to develop holistic methodologies and strategies on how to design, configure, use, maintain, extend, and retire complex information and communication systems. 6. ITOBO - SCIENCEKey Differentiators Between Work Proposed and State-of-the-Art WorkPackage 1 Roadmap for Next Generation Building Information Model • Fragmented sectors develop single products • Holistic approach and integration is missing • Even in multi-national companies integration is limited • Knowledge of THREE sectors is (1) analysed, (2) integrated, (3) synthesised • HARDWARE specification focuses on: • Multifunctional, integrated sensor motes (easy to deploy) • Innovative packaging & Energy harvesting (extreme long usage) • SOFTWARE development focuses on: • Systems for Environment Perception and Adaptation(from Distributed Repositories to Ontologies  Data Warehouse) • Innovative BUSINESS MODELLING focuses on: • IT-support for Collaborative Work-Models • Holistic Environmental and Energy Management State-of-the Art ITOBOKey-Features

  7. ITOBO - SCIENCEKey Differentiators Between Work Proposed and State-of-the-Art WorkPackage 2 Ubiquitous Wireless Sensing Infrastructure • Most sensor systems are SINGLE PURPOSE • Requirements and restrictions of the building sector are insufficiently considered • Current protocols and standards are not applied in large-scale control environments • SYSTEM DESIGN SOFTWARE development focuses on: • Design and installation support for wireless in-building control networks • HARDWARE development focuses on: • Heterogeneous integration and packaging for multi-functional planar sensor motes • Integrated node based micro-power management systems - energy harvesting, storage, conversion. • EMBEDDED SOFTWARE development focuses on: • Power efficient self-adaptability and re-configurability in large-scale heterogeneous in-door wireless networks State-of-the Art ITOBOKey-Features

  8. ITOBO - SCIENCEKey Differentiators Between Work Proposed and State-of-the-Art Constraint Based Optimisation of Smart Buildings Reactive building control systems dominate the market Predictive control strategies are published but not fully implemented Missing link between building control, energy management, and building maintenance The unique contribution to ITOBO is to support dynamic mixed-initiative configuration balancing energy efficiency with user preferences Software and theory development focuses on: Novel stakeholder preference language and elicitation tools for building occupants New models of soft constraints with context-dependent preferences Dynamic configuration algorithms WorkPackage 3 State-of-the Art ITOBOKey-Features

  9. ITOBO - SCIENCEKey Differentiators Between Work Proposed and State-of-the-Art Management and Service Architectures • Existing buildings consist of disconnected sub-systems • Multiple standards, protocols, networks and control environments • Available data cannot be analysed and used holistically • Limited improvement in overall building performance • Can only optimise sub-systems individually • Novel system-integration tools for intelligent buildings • Middleware for dynamic, self-configuring network management • Enhanced system-level reliability • Design system diagnosis and auto-reconfiguration software to enhance smart building reliability • Integrate a sensor/actuator platform within a reconfigurable, distributed building management and control system Workpackage4 State-of-the-art ITOBO Key Features Demonstration

  10. ITOBO - SCIENCEKey Differentiators Between Work Proposed and State-of-the-Art WorkPackage 5 Added Value Product Services • Currently, most of the design data “gets lost” during the commissioning process. • Design, Construction and Operation are mostly “isolated” processes. • ITOBO focuses on the development of integrated business models for life-cycle oriented building operation and supportive IT-infrastructure. • Unique Features are: • Integrated, standardised, multi-dimensional data management • Competency Modelling for Collaborative Networks • Mobile components for decentralised inspection and maintenance • Performance-based planning and scheduling for the maintenance of building services State-of-the Art ITOBOKey-Features

  11. ITOBO - SCIENCEKey Differentiators Between Work Proposed and State-of-the-Art WorkPackage 6 • Integration, Evaluation, Dissemination, and Field Tests • Most research projects have limited Industry-University interaction • The performance of building systems is often simulated but rarely monitored. Design data are seldom used as consolidated input for “performance evaluation metrics” • ITOBO will create methods and tools for “continuous feed-back” • Unique Features are: • Improve the understanding of: • Building systems behaviour • The “social” interaction of users with buildingsthrough computer interfaces • Large scale deployment in “Real” Buildings • Access to design data and building simulation results • International workshops in Living Laboratories State-of-the Art ITOBOKey-Features

  13. YEAR 1 YEAR 2 YEAR 3 I T O B ODeliverables • D 6.2 (M03): First Workshop to launch project in Ireland • D 6.4 (M13): Public Workshop jointly organised with Fraunhofer • presents Deliverables D 1.1 D 1.5, D 2-1 to D 2-3, D3-1, D5-1 • promotes the ITOBO-cluster in Central Europe • attracts new industry partners • D 6-5 (M 21): Demonstrator (V.1 ) in ERI-Building installed • integrates D2-4, D2-5, D3-2, D3-3, D4-3, D5-2 • testbed for D2-6 • D 6.6 (M27): 3rd Workshop to present evaluation of Demonstrator • present D1-5, D2-7, D3-1, D4-1, D4-2, D5-3, D5-4 • (SFI-intermediate review possible) • D 6-8 (M36): Demonstrator (V.2 ) in ERI-Building installed AND “Real World” Field Test (V1.0) in HSG-Building launched • integrates D2-8, D3-4, D4-4, D4-5, D5-5 • present D2-9

  14. ITOBO - SCIENCEAdded R&D-Values of the Proposed Research • The construction sector in Ireland contributes more than 20% of the Irish GDP while buildings account for approx. 40% of Ireland’s energy usage, contributing to over 30% of CO2 emissions. • The goal is to improve asset management while supplementing efforts to fulfil the Kyoto Protocol requirements. • Thus, ITOBO will … • enhance the management of large-scale, complex networks, services, and mobile users through introducing new network and management protocols • develop frameworks and algorithms to support mixed-initiative configuration for energy efficient buildings • design a system architecture that will support scale-free composition of service coalitions • support seamless end-to-end network composition and service operation through sensor and RFID hardware with dynamic features

  15. I T O B OStrategic Impact Through Industry Collaborations Make Ireland the LEADER in the ICT-sector for the Built Environment Create Technology Export Capabilitiesfor the ICT & Construction Sectors Create Multi-faceted Business Opportunitiesfor Additional Technology Developments
