  1. TAKS to STAAR Plan for phase-out of TAKS and phase-in of STAAR

  2. STAAR - EOC • Graduation Requirements • Freshman students and 8th grade students who are taking Algebra 1 for high school credit in 2011–2012 are the first groups to have EOC assessments as part of their graduation requirement • All 12 EOC assessments will be available in 2011–2012 in both paper and online modes for these students

  3. STAAR-EOC • EOC Assessments • English I, English II, English III • Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II • Biology, Chemistry, Physics • World Geography, World History, U.S. History

  4. STAAR- EOC • Graduation Requirements • A student must achieve a minimum score on an EOC for it to count toward the content cumulative assessment score • (i.e., a student must meet the minimum score standard for that score to be applied to the cumulative math total of Algebra 1 + Geometry + Algebra 2) • A student must achieve a required cumulative score in each of the four core content areas

  5. STAAR - EOC • Performance Standards for EOC Assessments • Standards will be set in February 2012 prior to first high stakes administration in spring 2012 • • First reports with performance standards applied will be available in June 2012 • • First retests will be offered in July 2012

  6. STAAR-EOC Performance Labels PERFORMANCE Level II: Satisfactory Academic Performance Level I: Unsatisfactory Academic Performance Level III: Advanced Academic Performance

  7. STAAR - EOC • Graduation Requirements for the Distinguished Achievement Program • Take all 12 STAAR EOC assessments • Meet cumulative score requirement in each of the four core content areas • Achieve Level III: Advanced Academic Performance (postsecondary readiness) on • – English III • – Algebra II

  8. STAAR - EOC • Graduation Requirements for the Recommended High School Program • Take all 12 STAAR EOC assessments • Meet cumulative score requirement in each of the four core content areas • Achieve Level II: Satisfactory Academic Performance on • – English III • – Algebra II

  9. STAAR - EOC • Graduation Requirements for the • Minimum High School Program • Take STAAR EOC assessments for courses in which they are enrolled and for which an EOC assessment exists (8–12 tests) • Meet cumulative score requirement in each of the four core content areas for courses specifically required on the MHSP (could be as few as 8 tests)

  10. STAAR - EOC • Graduation Requirements • In the future, TEA is planning three administrations of EOC assessments each year for • - Students who complete the course at different times of the year • - Retest opportunities • TEA is planning EOC administrations at the end of • - Spring • - Summer • - Fall

  11. STAAR • Graduation Requirements • For middle school students who take a high school course (e.g., Algebra I) prior to spring 2012: • - Students will take that particular EOC assessment • - Students taking the Algebra 1 EOC in 8th grade will not be required to take the 8th Grade Math STAAR test for 2011-2012.

  12. EOC and Credit • Per TEA Clarification of EOC: “A student’s score on the initial end-of-course (EOC) assessment shall count for 15 percent of the student’s final grade for the course as reported on the student’s transcript.” Therefore, a student’s cumulative grade in the class will be: 85% coursework average + 15% EOC

  13. EOC and Credit Assigning a grade to the EOC scale score: “TEA is not planning to provide a method by which scale scores can be converted to grading systems because of wide variations in grading policy from district to district.” Therefore, RISD will be working in collaboration with surrounding districts to determine scale score conversion to the grade used for calculation of a student’s final grade including EOC.

  14. EOC & Credit • If a student has a passing score in a course before the EOC score is calculated but a failing grade once the EOC score is included, the student CANNOT be given credit for the course. Student would need to do credit recovery and/or Student would need to retake EOC

  15. EOC & Retakes If a student retakes the EOC, the District WILL include the retake score as 15 percent of the final course grade only if the retake score allows the student to gain credit for the course. After a student earns credit for the course, subsequent retakes will not be included in the calculation of the final course grade.

  16. EOC & Special Education Students A student’s ARD committee shall decide which test a student takes and how the score on the EOC assessment shall be used for final course grades, credit decisions, and graduation requirements.

  17. EOC and GPA/Class Rank EOC scores will not be used to calculate a student’s grade point average or class rank. Therefore, the average of the student’s first and second semester grades will be used to determine GPA and class rank (prior to averaging in the 15% EOC).
