  1. Goal #8: SeX-Linked Inheritance

  2. Question: What do you know about Colorblindness?

  3. Fact or Fiction? A person with red-green color blindness can not discern between red and green. Instead they see both as grey. Fiction! They see yellows and blues varying in tone where someone with normal vision sees reds and greens!

  4.  Normal Vision Color Blind 

  5. Are you colorblind? Let’s find out! When it is your turn, follow the instructions on your color vision evaluation form. Come back to your seat as soon as you have viewed all the images.

  6. Who IS colorblind? Statistically speaking… 1/10 U.S. males 1/100 U.S. females

  7. IMAGINE…

  8.  Normal Vision Color Blind 

  9. Copy down this whole slide!! Sex-Linked Genes There are hundreds of genes on the X chromosome. There are only a few genes on the Y chromosome – all of them deal with male sexual function. X and Y are not homologous. Remember: Female XX Male XY

  10. Copy down this whole slide!! Sex-Linked Inheritance: Women Women have 2 X’s … therefore: If they have a recessive allele on one X, it can be masked by a dominant allele on the other X Normal Female: XCXC Carrier Female: XCXc Colorblind Female: XcXc A carrier is does not exhibit the trait, but can pass it on to her offspring!

  11. Copy down this whole slide!! Sex-Linked Inheritance: Men Males have only one X and therefore only 1 allele for these traits and therefore no second allele to mask the trait. Normal Male: XCY Colorblind Male: XcY

  12. Colorblindness Practice Normal Male X Carrier Female

  13. The Case of the Calico Cats Did you ever hear someone say that all calico cats are female??? IS it true or false?

  14. FYI: This is a calico cat! … MY calico cat!! Meet Cassiopeia (Peia for short!)

  15. The Case of the Calico Cats Did you ever hear someone say that all calico cats are female??? IS it true or false? IT’s true!!!!! But why????

  16. Copy down this information! Calico Cats Black and Orange fur are codominant XB = black XO = orange

  17. Female Genotypes There are three possible female genotypes for this locus: Copy down this information! Female Genotypes

  18. Male Genotypes Write down all this information! NOTE: Males can not be calico because there is only one copy of the X chromosome

  19. The Case of the Calico Cats Black Female X Orange Male
