Provincial Scholarship Program :Graduation Program Examination $1,000 Scholarship As a result of the cancellation of optional provincial examinations, the Provincial Scholarships will be awarded based on students’ performance on the Graduation Program Exams. These revisions are intended to recognize students’ academic excellence across the suite of graduation provincial exams.

Graduation Program Examinations Scholarship criteria At least a “B” (73%) final mark ( school mark and provincial mark combined) in ONE of the Gr. 12 Language Arts; namely, English 12, Communications 12, Francais Language premiere 12, or English 12 First Peoples. Note that the exam and school mark are both considered. Three “B”s (73% or higher) on ANY provincial exam : Science 10, English 10, Math 10, Social Studies 11, a Language Art 12. Please note : this “B” is based on the provincial exam mark alone. It does not include the school mark. One “A” (86% or higher) on any of the Gr.10-12 exams listed above ( which includes the Grade 12 Language Arts exams).

  7. Samples English 12 74% B (Combined school and exam mark) Science 10 73% B exam only Social Studies 11 75% B exam only Math 10 86% A exam only Three B’s and one A. At least a B in a Language Arts 12. This student qualifies for the $1,000.00 scholarship.

  8. Sample Francais Langue 12 87% “A” based on combined school mark and provincial exam mark. Sciences Humaines 11 78% B exam only English 10 79% B exam only English 12 74% B exam only One A and three B’s. At least a B in a Grade 12 language Art, in this case Francais Langue 12. This student qualifies for the Graduation Program Examination Scholarship.

Provincial Scholarship, continued If you wish to try to upgrade your exam mark by re-writing any of your Grade 10 provincial exams ( English 10, Science 10 or Math 10) you should see Mr. Johnston immediately to register. These exam re-writes will be written on dates/times set by the Ministry of Education either before or during the June 2012 exam sessions. Your highest score will be used to determine your eligibility for the provincial scholarship.

  11. Graduation Transitions Successful completion is required to graduate Grad transitions starts in Planning 10 and culminates in Grade 12. It is an opportunity for students to reflect on their knowledge and abilities and plan for life after graduation. Students must collect evidence of their achievements in the following required areas : Personal health : develop a personal health plan and document 150 min/week of moderate to vigorous physical activity. Community Connections : Participate in at least 30 hours of paid work experience and/or voluntary community service. Career and life Transition Plan: Explore personal and career goals and create a plan for life after graduation, including a budget.

  12. Grad Transitions In July, all information and directions for completing the requirements of Grad Transitions will be available on our school website. Students may complete Grad Transitions over the summer. It may also be taken in your 8 block Gr. 12 timetable or as a 9th“X” block course. Participation in Graduation activities is contingent upon completion of required Grad Transitions sections within a prescribed time frame.

  14. Entrance to Research Universities All Universities require English 12. Entrance to College, Teaching Universities or BCIT Langara BCIT Douglas Vancouver Community College Kwantlen Polytechnic University Vancouver Island University Thompson Rivers University Entrance to College, a Teaching University or BCIT requires ENGLISH 12 for most programs. But instead of an average GPA specific 1st year courses have grade requirements. For example to take 1st year Chemistry at Langara a student would need a minimum 73% in Chem 12 and a 60% in Math 12.

English 12 With the exception of very few programs English 12 is required for Post-secondary AdmissionAlso, in most cases English 12 has a minimum grade requirement for admission into any 1st year college and university classes. If this grade is not met then students will have to write a English Placement Test such as the Language Proficiency Index Test (LPI).SFU and Kwantlen need 60% for 1st year admission.UBC Van needs 70% in English 11 or English 12

  17. Implications of Math • Any Math 11 course will graduate a student from high school with a Dogwood Certificate. • Pre-Calculus Math is primarily for students wanting to pursue science/engineering based careers. Universities require this math for Business also. The curriculum includes : Trigonometry Relations and Functions Combinatorics Algebra: Expressions and Equations. • Foundations of Math is primarily for students wanting to pursue Arts at a research university or college, or Business at BCIT. The curriculum includes: Geometry Reasoning Data and Statistics Linear & Quadratic Relations Interest & Investment Probability Combinatorics

  18. More Math Apprenticeship and Workplace Math is primarily for students wanting to pursue apprenticeships, trades, some technologies, humanities or fine arts at college. This is not a high school to university entrance admission course. If a student wants to pursue a Fine Arts or Humanities degree (English, History, Philosophy, Languages, Cultural Studies such as Social Justice/Women’s Studies/Pacific Rim Studies/Art History etc.) they would have to go to college first then transfer to university. The curriculum includes: Finance Measurement Data Analysis Trigonometry Scale and Proportion. Math and English are important courses with regards to post-secondary entrance so please be aware of all possible post-secondary requirements when selecting courses.

  19. Pre-Calculus MA 12 AND Calculus 12 Double block (8 credits) This option is for students who would like to take Calculus while still in high school. Math will be taken each day throughout the year. Students planning to take Calculus, or who are required to take Calculus at a post -secondary institution, are strongly encouraged to take this course. It is recommended that students have a “B” in Pre-Calculus 11.

  22. Communication with our Grads Grade 12 students submit their email addresses in September to make a “blind” group email. I send out post-secondary news, jobs, volunteer opportunities, scholarships etc. I will add parents email addresses if you want to receive this service but I warn you some days I can send out 5 or more emails. Graduation Transitions** (4)  6. __________________ (4) 7. ___________________ (4) 8. ____________________ (4) **For Honour Roll and Principal’s List consideration, Gr. 12 students must be enrolled in 7 courses **Your Graduation Transitions block becomes a study block upon completion of Grad Transitions. Grad transitions can also be completed in the summer of 2012 or taken as a 9th “X” block outside of your 8 block Gr.12 timetable. * French Immersion Students: Francais Langue 12

  25. Study Block(s) A student’s Graduation Transitions block will automatically become a study once Grad Transitions requirements have been met. In addition, students may, at the time of course selection, register online for a second study block. Considerations will be given to students who have a heavy academic load or other exceptional circumstances. Importantly, at the time of course selection, students will also need to request a paper copy of the “Second Study Block Request Form” from their counsellor and return it to her completed. This form will then be given to Mme. Gaudreault for her consideration. A 2nd study may or may not be approved. Students are encouraged to take advantage of the many fine electives offered in Grade 12. They should carefully weigh the cost/benefit of having a second study. Students should also carefully choose one alternate course.

  26. Communications 12 Com 12 is intended to develop basic English skills. While some literature is studied, a greater emphasis is placed on grammatical structures and communication skills. This course is designed to prepare students for college entrance in those programs which accept Communications 12; it cannot be used for direct entrance to university. A provincial exam worth 40% of a student’s final mark will be mandatory.

  28. **Provincial Exams: Students must write the Grade 12 English or Communications Provincial Exam. **Advanced Placement (AP) Courses: AP English 12 – one block – 8 credits AP Psychology 12 – one block – 4 credits AP exams written in May. Scores determine student’s possible exemption from first year level course in that subject area.

  29. AP English Literature and Composition 12 / English 12 Challenge • This course is comprised of an extensive program of university level literature, thus expanding the depth and breadth of the English 12 curriculum. • Students may register for this course. Please check pre-requisites and discuss with your English teacher. Maturity, work ethic and contribution are major considerations in addition to your mark. • **Please check your course verification form to see whether you have been selected for this course. • AP English 12 is worth eight credits and is held during one block. You will register for both AP English and English 12 challenge.

  30. IDS – Independent Directed Study • Allows flexibility in educational opportunities • Senior students can explore an interest and design a course of study outside of the offered course list • Links curriculum to a career area • Criteria: • Student must demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimal supervision • The IDS course must be approved by the supervising teacher and principal • The IDS will count towards elective credit • Under supervision, the IDS plan must include: • The problem, project or area to be studied • A process for ongoing facilitation and evaluation • Criteria for determining successful completion • A credit value and grade level (11 or 12)

  31. Work Experience- 4 Credits for 90 hours of non paid work- must take 4 support courses, at least 2 at the Gr. 12 level, from the following focus areas: • Fine Arts, Design & Media • Fitness & Recreation • Business & Applied Business • Health & Human Services • Liberal Arts & Humanities • Science & Applied Science • Tourism, Hospitality & Foods • Trades & Technology

  32. Secondary Apprenticeship • A career program that offers students the opportunity to begin an apprenticeship while still in school. Dave De Pieri is the District Coordinator, email at ddepieri@deltasd.bc.ca/ • Must find your own placement with a certified tradesperson willing to oversee training • 4 credits for each 120 of paid employment – up to a maximum of 16 credits (480 hours) • Attend school half time, work half time • Opportunity to earn $1000 scholarship (after paid experience) • Trade areas include: Aerospace, Cosmetology, Electrical and Electronics, Construction, Graphic Arts, Horticulture, Hospitality, Lumber Manufacturing, Marine, Mechanical/Repair, Piping, Security Services, Motion Picture and Theatre, Parts/Warehousing, …..

  33. ACE-IT and CTC Programs • Ace it (Accelerated Credit Enrollment in Industry Training) • Open to Gr. 11 and 12 students interested in entry-level trades training • Most programs are dual credit and offered in partnership with post-secondary institutions • Program schedule depends on school site (semester or linear), but like apprenticeship, Ace-it runs on a half time school, half time work schedule • Programs include: • Drafting CADD program – see Mr. Kirkwood • Cook (Seaquam Sec. currently on Day 1) • Auto Service Technician (Seaquam Sec. currently on Day 1) • Construction Electrician (North Delta, 2nd semester) • Carpenter (North Delta, 2nd semester) • Applications due into Mr. Jensen by March 31.

  35. Enhancement Program In the past students have taken French, Spanish, Psychology, Criminology, Computer Science, Accounting, English and Math. Students may enroll in the September or January semester of each academic year on either Kwantlen campus, Richmond or Surrey. Applications are in the Career Centre. Completed applications and application fees must be received in the Career Centre by May 15 for the September semester and November 15 for the January semester. Courses are held in the evening.

  36. External Credit Options Students can receive credit from the Ministry of Education for activities and learning outside of the regular school setting. Examples include: • Young Drivers • External Athletics • Life Saving • Music • Dance • Cadets / Guides / Scouts • Coursework • Other…*students should see their counsellor

  37. Language Challenge Exams Example: Students with a background in Mandarin, Spanish, Punjabi, Korean, and German may apply to write a Challenge exam to earn Grade 11 and 12 credits. Applications are available in October and the exam is written in January at Delta Sec. There is a written and oral component to this test. Most universities will take the Challenge Exam as an academic admission course except UBC.

  38. Delta Access Online • The Delta School District has provided online learning opportunities for Gr.10-12 students. • Registration after Spring Break enrolls students in the April-August Session. • Online allows students to move ahead in a subject area, make up missed credits, and take a course that may not be available at their home school. • The responsibility to complete an online course rests with the student. • Courses offered in the areas of: • English PE 10 - **must complete to graduate • Mathematics Planning 10 – **must complete to graduate • Social Studies • Science • Business Education

  39. SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) The SAT is intended for students applying for admission to a university in the USA. SAT dates are in May and June for Gr. 11 and then you can rewrite at the beginning of Gr. 12. See Ms. Foster. The SAT measures verbal reasoning, mathematical problem solving and essay writing. Register on line at www.sat.collegeboard.com School Code: 821085 There are 6 test dates throughout the year at McNair Secondary in Richmond.

  40. Summer School • Full Credit (6 week) • Remedial (4 week) • Must have a final grade between 40-49% • Below 40% - student is recommended to take full credit course • Forms available in April

  41. Enrich Your Life… Encounters with Canada - Go to Ottawa for a week of career exploration. See the Parliament Buildings, museums, and historical monuments and attend a theme week. Costs are $625 and spending money. Delta Police Academy. Spend a week in July at the Delta Police Headquarters learning about what it is like to be a police officer. Physical fitness training, learn about the law, investigation techniques, traffic accident training… Applications will be available soon. Heart and Stroke Foundation is offering a summer program to motivate students with interest in biology, and medicine to consider a career in cardiovascular research. Air Time Canada – Want to be a pilot? Try out flight and ground school and fly a plane.   42. Things to keep in mind… • Select 7 courses plus 1 alternate course to maximize opportunity – it’s easier to drop than pick up a course in September • Choose wisely – be aware of all grad and post-secondary entrance requirements • Courses run based on numbers, so choose them now – don’t expect to be able to get into them later • It is not‘first come first served’ – take your time to make thoughtful decisions – create as much opportunity for yourself as you can! • Descriptions of all courses are available online. • Deadline for course selection : March 4th, 2012

  43. Seven courses/one alternate Please remember to choose seven courses and one alternate course. Course descriptions are online. Once you have decided upon which courses to take, please select your courses online. Go to “Pick Courses” on ParentConnect. Once you have entered your courses, please ask your parent to check the Final save box (in the rectangular white box outlined in blue) AND click the blue save box ( upper left). The computer cannot process your requests until both have been clicked.

  44. March 4th deadline Course selection is all online. Online course selection closes at midnight on March 4h. Please see SDS website under “Parents” for sign-on instructions for ParentConnect.
