  1. SCH3U - Quiz 1 (Unit 1)

  2. Question 1 • Name the six people who contributed to the atomic model and put them in order, from earliest to most recent.

  3. Question 2 • For the periodic table, which of the following elements has: • The smallest atomic radius? Mn, Ti, Li, C, Si • The highest electronegativity? I, Zr, N, Pd, S • Largest ionization energy? Ra, Ag, Ba, Cs, Cu

  4. Question 3 • Write chemical formulas for the following compounds: a) tin(II) sulphide b) calcium phosphate c) hydrofluoric acid d) iron(III) oxide e) diphosphorus pentoxide

  5. Question 4 • Write IUPAC names for the following compounds: a) H3PO4 b) Ca(OH)2 c) S2O3 d) NaCH3COO e) Sn(ClO3)4

  6. Question 5 • Compare and contrast molecular and ionic compounds. Use 3 points!

  7. Question 1 • Name the six people who contributed to the atomic model and put them in order, from earliest to most recent. • Democritus • Dalton • Thomson • Rutherford • Chadwick • Bohr

  8. Question 2 • For the periodic table, which of the following elements has: • The smallest atomic radius? Mn, Ti, Li, C, Si • The highest electronegativity? I, Zr, N, Pd, S • Largest ionization energy? Ra, Ag, Ba, Cs, Cu

  9. Question 3 • Write chemical formulas for the following compounds: a) tin(II) sulphide b) calcium phosphate c) hydrofluoric acid d) iron(III) oxide e) diphosphorus pentoxide • SnS • Ca3(PO4)2 • HF (aq) • Fe2O3 • P2O5

  10. Question 4 • Write IUPAC names for the following compounds: a) H3PO4 b) Ca(OH)2 c) S2O3 d) NaCH3COO e) Sn(ClO3)4 • phosphoric acid • calcium hydroxide • disulphur trioxide • sodium acetate • tin(IV) chlorate

  11. Question 5 • Compare and contrast molecular and ionic compounds. Use 3 points! Melting/Boiling Points – Ionic compounds have high MP/BP. Molecular compounds have low MP/BP. This is due to the stability of nature of bonds within these compounds. Texture and Hardness – Ionic compounds are hard and brittle (due to bonds). Molecular compounds are soft, waxy and flexible. Conductivity – Ionic compounds usually conduct electricity. Molecular compounds tend to not to. This is because when dissolved in water, ionic compounds dissociate into their individual charges (+/-) whereas molecular compounds lack the ability since they cannot dissolve in water. Solubility in water – Ionic compounds can readily dissolve in water. Molecular compounds do not.
