  1. Musing on Management: Emotional Intelligence being at the core of Compassionate Cultures

  2. We often mistakenly perceive CEOs and leaders as aggressive and unrelenting. But how true is this stereotypical leadership image and how does it affect organizations in reality? What sprouts the idea of compassionate leadership? In 2017, the Board of the company UBER decided to fire Travis Kalanick as Uber’s CEO. Following a special investigation into a social media post that went viral and exposed Kalanick’s toxic culture, the Board terminated his employment. What went wrong was Uber’s problematic culture and diversity problems, and failed HR procedures with drivers who were being sued for unfair practices and employees leaving for companies with healthier cultures and emotionally-intelligent leadership. Despite, Uber entering the billion-dollar club in 2015, the question comes that how much more could it have grown with a compassionate leadership team and a great culture? Toxic behaviour can undermine even the most prominent companies and act as a disease in the overall growth of teams and stakeholders.

  3. Who discovered the need of Musing on Management? While writing on Musing on Management, Henry Mintzberg, a professor of management at McGill University in Canada and INSEAD, questions the hype surrounding management fads and gurus and dares to suggest that ‘The Emperor has no Clothes’. Mintzberg, brought to the notice that delayering has created more problems than the problems it has solved because it is, in essence, a process by which people who barely know what’s going on get rid of a process, that fails to understand that great organizations, once created, don’t need great leaders: if a company can’t function on its own, a hero won’t help.

  4. He further stated that a leader who draws out the knowledge embedded in all parts of an organization is a leader who can help a company function alone–without a hero. Such leaders often practice what he calls the ‘Craft Style of Management’, inspiring and not empowering, based on mutual respect rooted in the experience, offers hope for improvement in the people of the organization. (Source – Harvard Business Review). Mark Lebusque, founder of the Learning Hook Brenden Carter shared in his book ‘Simply, Practically Human’, how his diverse career pathway has exposed him to how workplace values are practiced and when they are merely words on a wall. While revisiting to the question on ‘A gift of Real Human Connection’, Mark shared that his gift shall be that will help to build deeper human connection, in a very empathetic way. (Source: https://marklebusque.com/blog) It is becoming increasingly evident that a leader’s success is determined not just by their business skills, but also by how well they motivate, inspire, and get along with people. Emotional intelligence is the core of such compassionate cultures.
