Haemorrhoids are common and usually harmless, but they can cause symptoms such as pain and itching. It is normal to have hemorrhoid flare-ups. It's estimated that up to 75% of the population may get haemorrhoids at some point. 1. EAT FIBRE-RICH FOODS Fibre helps bulk up stool and softens it, so it passes more easily through your colon and rectum — relieves pressure on hemorrhoids caused by straining during bowel movements. 2. DRINK LOTS OF WATER Drinking enough water helps prevent dehydration, which can worsen hemorrhoid symptoms by making them more likely to bulge out of the anus when you go to the bathroom — something you want to avoid if possible! 3. AVOID SPICY FOOD You should avoid eating spicy foods like hot sauce or chilli as these can irritate your digestive system and cause inflammation in your bowels. Inflammation can cause hemorrhoids to become worse than they already are. 4. TRY WARM BATHS To take a sitz bath, one just sits in a tub filled with warm water for a while, often 10 minutes. The warmth helps relax the muscles around the anus and reduces swelling. 5. APPLY ICE PACKS OR COLD COMPRESSES TO THE AREA You can buy an over-the-counter product at your pharmacy or make your own with ice cubes or crushed ice wrapped in a towel. Apply for 20 minutes at a time until you feel relief. 6. EXERCISE A SQUATTING POSE Use a step stool to raise your feet while on the toilet.
