  1. “Thrombosed Haemorrhoid” Dr. P.T. Kenny.

Introduction • The correct name for this condition is a peri-anal haematoma. • It causes severe pain and discomfort and forces the unfortunate victim to seek help urgently. • The treatment of choice is incision and drainage of the haematoma. • The procedure is simple and can be done in your consulting rooms.

  3. Technique • Lithotomy position is recommended but is not essential. • A dental syringe and needle to administer a local anaesthetic works best. • Inject about 1ml of 1% lignocaine subcutaneously or submucosally into the haematoma. (If injected correctly, a pale area forms). • Incise the haematoma and expel the clot by squeezing it. There is usually very little bleeding. • Apply a loose gauze swab or a sanitary pad.
