  2. Agenda • Project Background • Project Objectives • Autoclave Design • Budget • Completed Vessel • Testing • Recommendations 2

  3. Background: Purpose of an Autoclave • Device for Curing Components Made of Composite Materials Under Heat and Pressure • High-Strength, Low Mass • Very Low Void Ratio • 10x Wet Layup 3 Image Courtesy directindustry.com

  4. Senior Design 1 Senior Design 2 Tasks Concept Generation and Selection Complete Pressure Vessel Construction Detailed Design, Ready for Construction Test Pressure Vessel Spec Stock Parts Final Assembly Test Autoclave Deliverables Complete Autoclave Design Complete, Operable (Pressure Only) Autoclave Partially Built Pressure Vessel Manual for Operation Some Parts Obtained Project Objectives Recommendations for Future Improvements 4

  5. Benchmark: ASC Process Systems Econoclave • 22” Dia x 48” Long Working Volume • 200psig Max Pressure • 500oF Max Temperature • 5oF Temp Uniformity • PC User Interface • Electric Heat • Extensive Safety Systems • Fast-Closing Door • Priced from $85k-$120k plus delivery and setup 5

  6. Customer Needs/Specs • 2’ dia. x 4’ internal working volume • 150 psig pressure • 175 psig emergency pressure relief • 400 F temperature • 10 F temperature resolution • Less than 4000 lb total weight

  7. Feature-Cost Comparison to ASC Econoclave; Closest Competitor

  8. Budget

  9. Grand Total:$5,559.24 Budget: $6000 • Contributions: • ME Department: $3000 • MET Department: $2500 • SAE Baja Team: $500

  13. Testing – Hydrostatic Test • Tank filled with water and pressurized to ~320psig • No leaks after 4 full hours

  14. Testing • Insulation • Heated at 450F for 20 minutes • No melting, slight discoloration • Thermistor • Check resistance versus mfg. specs at varying temps • Resistance found to be within limits • Blow-off Valve • Ensure that valve vents around 20psig • Found to vent at 22-24psig, shut at 21psig

  15. Testing • Bulkhead Connector Wiring • Cook wire at 450F for 15-60 min • Continuity retained, no melting, not brittle • Vessel Rotation • Ensure that vessel will not try to rotate when door open • As delivered, vessel rotated • Addition of a brace against hinge fixed problem

  16. Recommendations • Additional MSD Team to implement Heating and Controls • 1 ME for implementation • 1 EE for electrical design • 2 CE/SWE’s for user interface design • Design suggestions on EDGE
