This research initiative aims to enhance the efficiency and effectivity of DUS examination through various projects. Proposals are invited and selected based on criteria, with financial support from EZ via the Dutch Board for Plant Varieties (RvP). Results are reported and published on the RvP website.

  2. R&D projects in DUS (methodiekenprojecten) • Definition: research toenhance efficiency andeffectivity of DUS-examination. • With a financial support from EZ via Dutch Board for Plant Varieties = Raad voor plantenrassen (RvP).

  3. Procedure • Organizations are invitedtosubmitproposals. • The Board for Plant Varietiesselectsprojectsthatfulfillthe criteria. • A priority is establishedand are approveddepending on available budget. • Results are reportedtothe Board • A summary is published on the website.

Example 1 Possibilitiesfor DUS-examination in seaweed • Aim: development of methodfor DUS-examination in someseaweed species. • Conclusion: a protocol for DUS-examination andvarietydescription of seaweed has been developed. • Fine-tuning of characteristicsneeded. • Notyetclearifvarieties are availablewhichfullyfulfill UPOV-criterafordistinctness, uniformityandstabilityin Europe.

Example 2 Harmonization of disease tests in DUS (co-financedby CPVO) • Aim: European harmonization of resistance tests forsevenvegetablediseases. • Lettuce:Bremialactucae • Pea: Fusarium oxysporumf. sp. pisirace 1 andAscochytapisirace C • Pepper: TMV:0, PMMoV:1.2, PMMoV:1.2.3 and PVY:0 • Conclusion: test protocols are harmonizedbetweenthe European Examination Offices, exceptforFusarium in pea.Isolatesare defined. • Naktuinbouw has updatedthePlantumisolatecollectionaccordingly.

  10. Example 3 Chimera as lack of Uniformity in DUS • Chimera: are theycausedbygenetics or byenvironmental factors? • Conclusion: they have a genetic background. • Theycannotbeignored in DUS-examination. • Differs per crop type. Crop-by-crop approach needed.
