  4. Athletics and Activities • Fall sports: Football, volleyball, and cross country will have meetings with the coaches at Summit this spring. • Listen for announcements regarding signups and meetings. • Various sports camps are offered over the summer.

  5. 8th Grade Activities offered: • Cheerleading • Dance • Girls and Boys Basketball • Football • Wrestling • Girls and Boys Track • Girls Volleyball • Girls and Boys Swimming • Girls and Boys Cross Country • Girls Softball

  6. JMS Clubs & Activities • Art Club • Anime Club • Student Council • Yearbook • Fencing • Spanish Club • French Club • Show Choir • Jazz Band • Math Counts • Science Olympiad

  7. Beginning the School Year • The first day of school will be Thursday, August 14th • The school day starts at 7:45 and lasts until 2:50 • 45 minute class periods (4 min. passing)

  8. Eighth Grade Daily Schedule • 1st Hour--Core class • 2nd Hour--Core class • 3rd Hour--Elective • 4th Hour--Elective • 5th Hour--Core class • 6th Hour—Character & Career Class • 7th Hour--Core class • 8th Hour--Elective

  9. 4 Person Teaming at JMS • Students have a separate teacher for each core area (Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies) • Teachers in their specialty area • Students will be in the same team all year

  10. Required Classes • Math • Language Arts • Science • Social Studies • Health & Technology are required and meet every other day for 1 semester. • PE is required and meets every other day all year. • Character & Career is required and meets every day all year.

  11. Electives • French, Spanish, and Band meet every day all year long. • Mixed Choir meets every other day all year long. • All other electives meet every other day for one semester. • Animal Science, Art, Current Events, Current Science, Drama, FCS, Fantasy Math, Financial Literacy, Engineering, Issues and Social Responsibility, Math Applications, Modern Cultures, and Our World.

  12. www.ihaveaplaniowa.gov • All students will complete career planning “Guideways” in preparation for post-secondary training during Character & Career class • Students will have opportunity to research careers based on interest inventory questions • Create a “4-year plan” which will be revised each year through high school

  13. 8th Extended Learning Program (ELP) • 8th Algebra I/Geometry and Accelerated Science • Contests: Quiz & Science Bowls, Math Counts • ELP pullout during Character & Career Class • Mock Trial/History Day replace parts of Character Education/Career Development Classes • HS/ College Planning done through the Career Development class for ALL students • Letters sent out to qualifying students this spring explaining options

  14. Elective Classes will be entered in school when JMS staff comes over to Summit.

  15. Schedules will be mailed out in August • Fall Open House – Meeting Teachers • Get ready for another outstanding year in 2014-15!!
