KBr windows for FTIR | Plutus Science

A sample is typically sandwiched between two windows, detached by a known pathlength. KBr windows for FTIR (KBr, spectroscopic grade) is typically used as the window material because it is transparent in the IR, between 4000u2013400 cm. https://plutus-science.com/.

  1. Uses of FTIR window Potassium Bromide (KBr) is a material commonly used in FTIR window chemical analysis. KBr has a rather larger spectral range than Sodium Chloride (NaCl) and has very good transferral from 250nm –26μm. Its index of deflection varies from 1.46 - 1.59 over this range. KBr is water soluble and its surfaces should be secured from exposure to moisture. Exposure to moisture will demean the surface of the window. Potassium Bromide windows offer good resistance to mechanical shock, can be easily divided and can be used in temperatures up to 300°C. The application of infrared spectrometers in the observation field is very popular, and infrared sample preparation methods are various , which can meet the observation needs of various products. If it is a polymer material or a low melting point material, you can find an appropriate way to prepare the test sample. Nowadays, the sample preparation methods of infrared spectroscopy potassium bromide tablet method, film method, and attenuated total reflection method. Since textile fibers are mostly solid fibers, the sample preparation methods of FTIR window method and attenuated total reflection method are most commonly used.

  2. Testing method of the potassium bromide tableting method is relatively complicated. During the test, first take the test sample and use a Hastelloy slicer to cut up it for use; then weigh the sample and mix with potassium bromide, and at the same time put down the mixed substance in an agate mortar and grind it carefully until it is purely mixed ; Consider the appropriate amount of sample, keep it at the compression mold, and press the tablet to form potassium bromide salt tablets.
