  1. Blest Are We Unit 2 “Baptism and Confirmation” Chapter 5: “We Are Baptized into the Body of Christ”

  2. God’s Spirit baptized each of us and made us part of the Body of Christ. 1 Corinthians 12:13 • This Scripture verse is from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians, a book of the New Testament. • Saint Paul wrote this letter to the Church in Corinth, a city in ancient Greece. • To help the Corinthians understand this idea, Saint Paul used the comparison of the Church, or Body of Christ, as being like a human body. All the parts need each other and must work together. • Each of us makes up the Body of Christ. No matter who we are, we are all baptized into one body, the Church.

  3. The Baptism of JesusMark 1: 9-11 • In the Scripture reading noted above, Jesus went to visit his cousin, John, to be baptized. • The name ”Jesus” means ”God saves.” • Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River. • The Spirit, like a dove, descended upon Jesus and a voice came from Heaven, saying, “You are my beloved Son. With you I am well pleased.”

  4. We Are Baptized into the Body of Christ • Jesus gave us the Sacrament of Baptism to free us from sin and to make us children of God. • In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are freed from Original Sin and all personal sins. • In the Sacrament of Baptism, we also become members of the Body of Christ.

  5. Faith Words • Sacrament of Baptism – In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are freed from Original Sin and all personal sins. We become children of God and members of the Body of Christ. • Original Sin – Original Sin is the sin of Adam and Eve that has been passed on to all human beings. • Body of Christ – The Body of Christ is the Church, or the People of God.

  6. The Way to Eternal Life • For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish, but have eternal life. John 3: 1-16 • Just as Jesus taught Nicodemus, in the Sacrament of Baptism, we are “born from above” with water and the Holy Spirit. • We are filled with sanctifying grace and begin our spiritual journey as children of God. • Catholics and other Christians are ”born from above” because they have received the Sacrament of Baptism. • In the Sacrament of Baptism, we are baptized with water and receive the Holy Spirit

  7. The Way to Eternal Life (continued) • John 19: 38-42 • Nicodemus helped Joseph of Arimathea prepare Jesus’ sacred body for burial. • We Believe that through Baptism, we become children of God and members of the Body of Christ.

  8. Building Up the Body of Christ • As baptized Catholics, we are called by God to build up the Body of Christ. The saints did this by using their gifts and talents for the good of the Church. Reading stories about saints can inspire us to think of ways that God may be calling us to serve. • Saint Maximilian Kolbe https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-maximilian-mary-kolbe/ • Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-rose-philippine-duchesne/
